Just spoke to my vet on the phone. He's fine with home testing without bringing him in for curves. He's also fine with the possible change in insulins. He wants me to get him back up to the 5u 2x/day keep him on that for 3-5 days then do a curve at home and come in for a consult. He even said if I ever felt the need to cuss him out, it was ok...:p

My vet and the vet at NC State Vet School gave me my choice. One thing I learned in the Acro group is that at higher doses, some kitties appear to feel a sting from Lantus. Levemir is pH-neutral, so does not sting. Grayson was at 50u BID, so you can imagine if it had stung, I would've known it!

So if given a choice, I would request the prescription for Levemir.

Tell me again where you're located? US? Canada? Other?

I used to get my pens/vials at Walgreens. There are some pharmacies, as well as Costco, that sometimes will sell one pen at a time. They don't advertise it, you'd have to ask. I've also gotten cartridges (available in Canada), where it's MUCH cheaper. Some people will also go in together and purchase a box of pens or cartridges together and split the cost (I got one from another FD mom for $25). The pens/cartridges are better if you're at lower doses, as the shelf life of Lev is 42 days (Lantus is 28). Keep in mind, for someone shooting a 1u dose, a single pen will last several months. When G was at his max, I was going through a pen every 3rd day, so it never got old. But the pens are 300u vs 1000u in a vial. If the vial loses its effectiveness, you are wasting a good portion of it (and your $$$). Definitely shop around and find the options. I checked Walmart, Walgreens and a local pharmacy. At that time, Walgreens was the most affordable. At one point the manufacturer also had some coupons - not sure if they still offer them, but it was $50 off your first purchase; $25 off your next. Will see if I can find the info - or you can check in the Lev forum with the "stickies" at the top.

Thanks Lu. I will talk to the vet about the Levemir. I live in U.S. And we have Walgreens and Walmart in my town(no Costco though). I believe the plan is to start with a dental and see if that is any help at all. I just bought the bottle of ProZinc, so I think we'll probably use that up first. Money is extremely tight right now. I truly appreciate any and all info!
