I was wondering if coconut oil is safe for kitties? I use it on dry skin but vegetable always tries to get into it, I gave in once & let her have a itty bitty lick of what was left on my hand but then I got scared thinking maybe it's not safe. I tried doing a little research online but have found conflicting reviews.

Does anyone have any experience with coconut oil, is it safe?

A lot of us use a little coconut oil for constipation, flaky, dry skin and it's a safe fat that can help put a little weight on too

As long as you're giving it in small amounts, it's safe...helps to loosen up hairballs too

I've seen a range of .25 to .5 mls twice a day of organic cold pressed virgin coconut oil. Neko occasionally gets a little bit but my civie gets it more often to help with hairballs.

This is helpful to know. I like everything it can do except the weight gain. At the small dose you mentioned, do you have an increase in weight or BG numbers for your sugar cat?

Neko has acromegaly, it's hard to determine what causes any weight gain, but she's pretty steady now. I don't notice any changes in BG due to it.

Trouble has been having some problems with hairballs- or vomitting with hair in it.. and so trying some coconut oil.. I gave it before his dinner tonight- Is that ok? Or does it work better separately from food. Also.. for how many days would I give it in a row...

His BG's have been all over the place- well for Trouble- and noticing a little pattern- he dips low- does well- then has 2 high days in that time he will vomit about 10 hours after eating- a little food- and more hair (but it is not a dry hairball), then BG's start to drop. He is acting fine, Bowel Movements are fine. He is an excessive groomer, and HATES to be brushed.. but I will try to do it a little more. If it continues I will check in with the vet- but want to try the coconut oil or butter first:) Thanks for any help:)

I just added it to food, in the liquid format. Some people let their kitties lick it off the spoon. I don't think it makes much difference when you give it. When I talked to civie Theo's vet about it, she said 3-4 times a week was OK. Coconut oil can make them gain weight so you have to balance that too. One of our members gave it daily to her skinny CKD kitty to help him gain weight.

Thanks Wendy! I appreciate it. We will try every day for now and see what happens.. Hoping its nothing serious- brand new for him- he always vomits after grass- but not without it... and not ever really hairballs.. today it was grass and hair.. but the grass was from this morning...

Will watch his weight- I think he is ok for now- not skinny anymore- but not overweight:) Thanks again..

p.s. He licked it right off the spoon- just loved it- I was going to give him some organic homemade ghee- but thought I would try this first :)
