Oonagh's Mom

Member Since 2014
Hey guys,

It has been quite a few weeks since last I posted about my cat Oonagh. I am beginning to suspect that she is not a Type I but maybe closer to a Type II. Just to refresh memories, I was having trouble making a decision about insulin due to cost, etc., Well, she started doing great on just canned, pate type food. And we have been playing a lot.

We had a few setbacks when I tried to introduce Blue Buffalo dried food just for small "snacks" so she could have something on her tummy and let me sleep though the night. This turned out to be a huge mistake as within a few days, she started peeing heavily again.

And this cat has a death wish to boot. That same week, she both managed to force open a set of accordion pleat doors behind which I keep my kitchen trash. in said trash were a few leftover bones from a fried chicken. Then, forgetting about the dangers of lilies, I brought some into my house that I had bought to take to a reception. I set them on top of my entertainment center, as Oonagh "never" gets up there anymore--except when she wants to tease her mom by chewing on the lilies. That little brat looked me straight in the eye, reached her lips out, and nibbled on a petal.

It wasn't until AFTER she threw them up, and AFTER I looked up "cats and Lilies" on the internet that I freaked.

OK, that was several weeks ago.

Then, I let her have a tiny bit of Iam's hair ball food because of the other cat.....this caused an obvious drop in blood sugar. Again, I was frantic, sure I had killed her., etc.

When out of the blue, in two days time, two friends separately mentioned coconut oil. I decided to give it a try. Both cats are doing better than I've seen them do in many, many years!

I melt about a tablespoon or so and mix it with each of their meals. Now Oonagh is not starving. She is happy and content. I call it a miracle.

I don't know if anyone else has tried coconut oil to help regulate their cat's diabetes but I would be interested to see if anyone else has had the same results. Again, I ask people NOT to blindly follow my example as each cat is unique and each cat has a unique physiology.

I tried the coconut oil, only a few of my crew would even eat it, even with only a tiny amount added per dish. I wonder if brand really makes a difference. I haven't actually mustered the courage to try it myself to find out if it is yucky, lol

We LOVE coconut oil in this house! DH and I use it for everything, and Dunders also enjoys some. It, combined with some other things we've been trying, seems to be helping his health. He's looking & acting pretty darn good for a cat his age (18/19)! You'd never guess he's as elderly as he is...

I am trying coconut oil for my two older females who are not diabetic but have early kidney disease and get constipated from the phosphorus binder I put in their raw food. The Miralax doesn't seem to be working so I am trying the oil to see if I get a better result. It is supposed to help with digestion.

I am NOT giving it to my sugarcat because I read where it raised bg levels - I don't want to risk that.

I bought a tub of it a while back (researched for a good brand and then ordered online) and I've now completely forgotten why I bought it!
But I'm sure there was a really good reason at the time.... (Was it to do with diabetes, I wonder...? (Geez, I must getting old.... ))

Robin - pop over to Feline Constipation for info on the feline GI tract, how it works, when it doesn't, and options for managing.

I am using a tub I got at Wal-Mart. It's not Virgin Coconut Oil meaning it's made from older coconuts. My two didn't like the flavor of the Virgin oil--it has a strong coconut flavor.

I have tasted both and the one from Wal-Mart has a very light flavor. I like the taste of the other but only had a sample donated by a friend so I haven't gotten to actually cook much in it for myself. It's pretty expensive from what I understand so I haven't been in a rush to go to the health food store.

For now, we'll stick with the Wal-Mart.

I have looked at several online sites. I know one has to be really careful about using the internet, but I've mainly read only positive things about it. My friend who let me try some of the virgin oil told me she has a friend with Parkinson's who uses 6 TABLESPOONS a day! But it seems to be helping his symptoms. So far, I've been very impressed with our use of it. In fact, I'm about to need to go buy some more.

I would like to know what the consensus here regarding using Coconut oil for diabetic cats. Thank you

We use coconut oil in our household (for humans) for everything. When I was making frozen food (for Merlin's night food) in the muffin tray, I was having problems getting it out so I had the brainy idea to rub coconut oil in the muffin tray before placing the low carb FF pate food. Now I take the tray out from the freezer, let it sit out for about 5 minutes, and then they just pop out. I get my coconut oil from Whole Foods and it states that it is zero carb.

My cats love it - we use cold pressed virgin organic coconut oil and they will eat it from my hands or in the food. They get less than 1/4 tsp a day in my attempt to get weight on one of them :)

Do you give it to them in solid form or do you heat it? I have some of the same but have not tried it yet on my two older civvies. I am not sure how to give it to them. I guess I could scoop some out to see if they lick it or are repulsed.
