I'm not sure if I should've posted this in the ProZinc forums or here, but I decided on here as it gets more traffic.

I stopped all food except for YoungAgain Zero Mature on 7/16 and noticed an immediate difference. Before that, he was free fed YA and had Fancy Feast pates before shots. Lately he has been giving more and more wonderful blues and greens, but still the occasional high number.

I've dropped his dose down from 1U to .25U, but I wonder if that is still too high as he is only getting 1 shot a day sometimes. Should I drop down to, say, .125 and do it twice a day? Should I shoot at lower numbers? He has gone 2 days without insulin before, but then jumps back up with a high number that is easily brought down again. I know I am really REALLY bad at getting mid cycle numbers :(, but I'll try to get more.

He is also a very naughty cat and keeps getting into the trash for contraband food. I watched him rip open my bedroom trash for a discarded pizza roll. I've also seen coffee-ground paw prints on the freezer. Could the high numbers be from these snacks? I try my best to keep things away from him, but he is sneaky. I can't put a lid on my kitchen trash as it's smushed in an awkward place and the lid doesn't fit anymore. Dishes go in the washer immediately, and I try to keep the other bins as empty as possible.

He is getting 1/8 cup of YA twice a day. I tried moving him back to free feeding, but my other cat has no self control and will keep gorging himself until he vomits (multiple times). I'm also worried that if he goes back to free feeding, I can't give insulin if he needs it, since he has to eat before the shot. I'd rather not go back to FF as he is doing so well on YA.
 
If he's breaking into garbage cans then he may need more food. I feed YA as well and like it, but it's good for them to get some wet food as well as they notoriously don't drink enough. Even giving half a can of FF morning and night may satisfy your cat enough to not break into the garbage.
 
I don't think he needs more food. He has actually gained weight while on YA. I do occasionally give him a lunch, and I know my dad feeds him some here and there. He is just a sassy guy. I would just free feed him, but my other cat can't handle it (civvie needs to lose some weight, anyway)

oh it definitely helps them gain weight. CC gained TOO much. She gained 4 and now needs to lose 3. lol
 
it does really help with BG levels though. I credit it with helping cc into remission last year.
 
Mizuniful, is there a thread where you describe how you got to this point? I have a foster cat who is taking 2 units 2x/day, and I'd like to get him off it so I can get him a furrever home. (It's a complicated story, but we can't keep him long term, we just wanted to get him off death row.) He's only been on insulin 5 months - I feel like there's a fair chance I can do this. I've had him about 2 months. The biggest challenge has been getting him off dry food, but we're slowly getting there.
 
Dr Elsey dry food chicken is 4.69 carbs which is about he same net carb as YA an less calories so kitty can eat more-they also have a salmon that is around 9% if running low

I also recommend starting your own thread! Every cat is different so what worked for mine may not work for yours.

Low carb canned food (like Fancy Feast Pate) is a good starting point. That may cause a huge decrease in the insulin needed, depending on what you are switching from. Also make sure you are testing regularly with a glucometer! The spreadsheets provided here are amazing.

If I am being honest here, my cat didn't do too well on the FF (general health wise, not just numbers), so I switched him over to Young Again Zero Mature dry food and noticed an immediate difference. I credit Sporks (almost) remission with this food.
