Hi everyone, Alex Olivia and her buddy Donovan can't seem to shake the URI bug they picked up at the shelter. They both went through a round of Clavamox while there b/c staff suspected UTI's.......no UTI signs, but they are both sneezing and a little 'raspy' in the nose. Alex Olivia's eye was goopy, but is looking better.....it still waters some, but no mucus like before. I have been putting Terramycin on it and it seems to have helped some, although it's a little swollen.

I was at TNR clinic today and told my story, briefly, to two vets and they suggested 0.5ml Clindamycin BID for 10-14 days........I just want to make sure this is OK for a diabetic kitty (spreadsheet is attached, schedule has been crazy so will concentrate on getting several more 'test points this week) whose BUN was 47.

THANKS for any advice you can provide!

I forgot to mention I have been adding l-lysine to her food am and pm.......as well as aluminum hydroxide (scant 1/8 teaspoon)

I've given clindamycin to both of my diabetic kitties with no problems, though it is usually given only for mouth infections. I have not heard of it being given for a URI before.

there was some debate among the vets about which antibiotic they would use based on her having an elevated BUN reading.......I do have the ability to switch out the antibiotic, I am waiting to hear what the consensus is here before I start her on anything......THANKS everyone!

What is the urine specific gravity and creatinine levels? A high protein diet will elevate the BUN. Dehydration also raised BUN.

SG was 1.020 on Feb 1st (she was still in the shelter at this point) and CREA was 2.4 on Feb 7th (one day out of shelter). She has been on wet food since being here in our foster home, but not in the shelter.......

I really would like to start her on this ASAP so hoping some people have some more insight if it's OK for her, thanks!

I see of no problem for a diabetic cat. Plumb's vet drug handbook does state:
Patients with severe renal and/or hepatic disease should receive the drug with caution and the manufacturer suggests monitoring serum clinderamycin levels during high-dose therapy in these patients.

Plumbs also gives a dose of 5-10 mg/kg. It also says it is available as a 25 mg/ml solution so if you are using that concentration the 1/2 ml bid is not, to me, a high dose.

Re: Clindamycin OK for diabetic (Alex Olivia) with BUN of 47

thanks Larry! I do have the 25 mg/ml solution and will start her on it right now......she actually sounds a little bit better today so I am hoping this really kicks those germs' butts and get rid of anything that might be influencing her numbers, etc......

Clindamycin does not affect my diabetic's number.

This site says that C is effective against bacteria that infect the skin, oral cavity, bone and respiratory tract.

THANKS! she has already shown improvement in just the last 24 hours (total of 3 doses).......trying to get her healthy - Venita I sent her info to DCIN on Friday in hopes of getting her in the adoption queue with her best friend Donovan (he's not diabetic).....I have been fostering them for a local rescue.
