Clindamycin - more questions

Our vet gave Midgie, our civvie, some clindamycin for what might be aspiration pneumonia. I had them give me pills instead of liquid because I'm hoping to sneak them into treats.

Is there anything in particular I need to watch for with this med?

My cat Alex can't take Clindamycin in either form. He has gotten horrible diarrhea each time we have tried which always upsets me because he could really use it for his teeth.
Yes you should watch for diarrhea and/or vomiting. If either occur, call your vet. You'll probably be told to discontinue the Clinda if that happens which hopefully it won't.

She's not too keen on eating this morning, even with adding fortiflora to it. I'm guessing that's because of the clindamycin. When the vet calls today, I'll ask her what I can do with that. I think I still have some anti-nausea and appetite stimulant from when Ru was sick in December.

My girls have always been strictly indoors. The only time they've been outside is to and from the car, so not very often. Since I brought Midgie home yesterday, she's been at the window jabbering her head off. After we closed the windows, she was still just jabbering her head off. ALL NIGHT LONG. Could this be agitation caused by the antibiotic or just a solid case of spring fever after having been outside (in the carrier of course)?
 
Well, it seems like she wasn't eating just the food with the fortiflora in it. I tried a different flavor, put in the florti, she turned her nose up at it. I tried that flavor again, sans forti, and she's eating fine now. Oy.
 
alex won't touch fortiflora either. an alternative is a good quality human probiotic from any health food store.

i use Ultimate Flora Critical Care 50 Billion, but there are many others available. Whole Foods carries Ultimate Flora Critical Care 50 Billion. look for it in the refrigerated section. It's pricey, but a little bit goes a long way. i give alex about a third to a half capsule twice a day mixed in food a few hours away from giving the antibiotic. i also continue giving the probiotic for a few days after the abs are finished.

if you keep the bottle in the refrigerator it'll last a long time.

Thanks. I'll check that out. I don't want her to feel worse than she already seems to today.
 
Clinda is one pill that when given NEEDS to be chased with water.........if she won't eat after pilling, syringe some water to make sure that pill goes all the way down.
 
I've only given her one dose so far. I wrapped it up in one of her regular soft treats and she didn't even try to chew it, just gulped it down whole like she normally does.

I think she's probably starting to feel it kicking in this morning. She was quieter than normal after she finally ate. She normally bounces around the house after breakfast.

I'm just hoping what the vet saw on the x-ray is this aspiration pneumonia thing and not some kind of mass. I will hopefully get a call from them today to see what the radiology consult says. The wonky breathing thing showed up really suddenly and it started less than 24 hours after she urped up two of the biggest hairballs I've ever seen.

when you have the time, please Google Valentine shaped heart in cats and read through the info. It may sound "pretty" but it is not the shape heart you want in your cat.
 
I know its not "pretty". I was actually expecting her to say it was heart related so that was the first thing I asked about. She said that Midgie's is only slightly misshapen and it didn't look like it should be enough to be concerned about. Dr K said her heart rate was completely normal. We'll see what the radiologist says about that today, too.


(I lost my first cat when he was 18 months old to cardiomyopathy, which is why that was my first suspicion. He had been misdiagnosed by vets in 2 states before we finally found one who took one look at his x-ray and immediately shuttled us off to the cardiologist. We started him on blood thinners but he ended up with a saddle thrombus. We got him to their office less than 30 minutes after he threw the clot but they weren't able to restore any blood flow to his hind legs and we had to let him go.)

Midgie weighs a whopping 6 pounds....do you think I should go with a smaller amount on her or does that matter?

she's a tiny one!
i really don't know if it matters or not. however, given her size i would try a smaller amount first. you can always up the dose if necessary.
 
She's all fluff. Everyone is shocked the first time they touch her and realize how tiny she is. She's tall though.
