Clindamycin effect on BG #s

Boo had dental work done this past Thursday, that involved multiple extractions. Vet put a fentenyl patch on her and gave me Clidamycin liquid to give twice daily for 14 days. Since then her BG numbers have been running pretty flat and a bit on the high side....... a very different pattern than what I was seeing previously. I had expected a change as a result of being relieved of the dental pain, but I was expecting lower numbers in more of a curve that would, hopefully point to the need of a reduction. What I see now looks like an increase is needed. Does Clindamycin liquid contain sugar? I've tasted it and it's horribly bitter, but it feels a bit sticky where it has dribbled down the side of the bottle. Anyone know if it contains sugar? The label didn't say.

Many of the compounded liquids will have some sort of sweetener in them. You can check with the vet or the pharmacy that did the compounding and find out for sure. When my Maxie girl had her 6 extractions she was eating fine, but really didn't seem like "herself" for about a week or so. Her glucose numbers were in a higher range for about a week. Even with pain medication some kitties will be very uncomfortable for awhile after multiple extractions

When my girl had her dental including an extraction, it took about 10 days till I saw her numbers getting back to normal for her and then a little bit longer to see any improvement in those numbers. I used Clindamycin both injectable and pill form so have no idea if there is any sweetener in the liquid form. She was on Codeine for pain via cream massaged into her ears.

Interesting. I didn't know cats could receive codeine, Linda. Could you tell us a little more about this, please?

@Critter Mom , it was transdermal Codeine Gel 5 mg./0.1ml strength dispensed in syringes (sans needle). The label didn't specifically state the dose but indicated each syringe had 0.18ml of the gel so that would make each dose 9 mg. and it was to be given every 12 hours. It was applied with a gloved finger to the inside of her pinna. Worked a charm for her. While it made her a bit drowsy, she was easily aroused and had no side effects that I was aware of. It seemed to be quite effective. When she came home from the hospital, she went straight to the kitchen looking for food but then was reluctant to eat. She obviously wanted to, but like Saoirse, was very hesitant and only nibbled, I assume due to pain. I decided to give her the codeine about an hour before her pre-shot feedings and it made her comfortable enough to eat well. After about 3-4 days, I cut back to half the syringe content per dose to help me evaluate if she was having less pain and it seemed to keep her comfortable. Sure was easier than pills or shots.
