Clavamox or is there a better antibotic

Fritz might have upper respiratory infection vet prescribed Clavamox. Is there a better one ?
I read kitties vomit while on this?????
 
Clavamox is the most common, general purpose antibiotic for cats. other good general antibiotics are Baytril and Zeniquin. Both of those are in the same family, quinolones, of antibiotics while Clavamox is in a different family.
My experience is that Baytril and Zeniquin cause less GI upset.
 
Yes, I've had the same experience as Larry. The Clavamox usually throws Bandit's GI system off even if I'm using Fortiflora with it, so we typically opt for Baytril if we can.
 
The better one is what works best for your kitty to be honest. Clavamox is a great antibiotic for upper respiratory infections, but can cause upset stomach or diarrhea (my cat Jason gets both - he starts out ok on the Clavamox, but towards the end of a course his appetite drops; also if I give it to him on an empty stomach, he pukes). Doxycycline is another great antibiotic for URIs (it's the most commonly used antibiotic for URIs at the shelter I work at - Clavamox is typically used with more severe URIs, or if it didn't respond to the Doxy), but can also cause vomiting (neither of my cats can tolerate Doxy). Orbax is another great one, although it's typically prescribed in conjunction with Doxy or Clavamox (at least at the shelter I work at, not sure about other vets) - it seems to be easier on the GI system. I regularly treat Jason's chronic herpes/URI flares with Clindamycin, an antibiotic that's really meant more for dental infections and the like, but Jason tolerates it really well and it does the job.

Thank you I gave him his first pill this afternoon and this evening a probiotic. Appreciate all the choices I will tuck this away for future references.
 
Sometimes my boys do well on clavamox and sometimes the side effects seem to be worse--I have found giving it on a full tummy helps--like the others it seems toward the end of the 7 days is the time it usually makes them feel more blah... my theory is because most of the bad stuff has been killed off.
It does work well tho-( I give fluids at home when on a AB as well to help push the infection out and keep hydrated)
