Baby has an abscess, we went to vet & he gave Clavamox. I requested an appetite stimulant too because I know she doesn't eat on antibiotics. Even with appetite stimulant she refuses to eat much. Any suggestions?

Have you got any Pepcid AC (not complete)? You might try 1/4 tablet.

Have you got an oral syringe? Make a slurry of the food and give the food via syringe in small spaced amounts.

Also, plain yogurt, given 2 hours after the antibiotic may help restore some normal bacteria, as will Forti Flora.

ideas for getting her to eat..

Enticing a Cat to Eat

Here are some things you can do do entice your cat to eat:

-sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core.

-making a buffet to give him choices
- heating food

sprinkle food with :
FortiFlora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
parmesean cheese
smashed crumbles of dry food
bonito/tuna flakes (Can be found at Asian markets or sometimes in the Asian food section of a large grocery store.)
halo chicken treats (freeze dried chicken) -- crumble into dust over food -- my Wolfie loves this stuff.
pour a little water from tuna in water over food (I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats and it shouldn't contain soy -- check labels)
powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
trader joe tuna for cats
baby food -- beechnut or Gerber Stage 2 -- you want a baby food that is only a protein + broth (although the Gerber contains cornstarch). It should have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels if you can't find beechnut.
kentucky fried chicken
deli turkey /chicken
plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
chicken broth -- low sodium

If enticements don't work, you should consider:
-assist feeding ( syringe or make little meatballs and place in mouth)
-and/or talking to your vet about appetite stimulents ( mirtazapine or cyproheptidine)

Good morning, I thank you for the suggestions - we have tried everything - even DRY
She does have output to litterbox (very little) as she is eating a micro amount. I am syringe feeding her & will call vet when he opens here soon. I am going to ask for Orbax to see if they can give her that. We have to kick this infection & she has to eat.. we still have 8 more days to go of an antibiotic ohmygod_smile
Historically this has always been an issue for her NOT eating/antibiotics... with her on insulin - she has to eat. I will keep tyring the tricks of the trade, CrAzY cat even refuses tuna, fish flakes, etc.

Some antibiotics are possible to dose subQ (NOT Convenia - its for skin infections).
That would by-pas the sensitive GI tract and maybe make it easier to keep the appetite going.

I'd defer to your vet in terms of what class of antibiotic; that's what they get trained to do :-)
I just appreciated being able to do subQ with highly pill-resistant cats!

If not able to do that, you might ask about sulcrafate. It covers irritated/ulcerated areas of mucosa to protect from further irritation. It gets given at a different time to allow it to coat the areas, which will make scheduling more complicated.

(Brain storming here)

Thanks Sandy, she is eating on her own - tiny amounts but I am so thankful. The orbax is one dose every 24 hours - so a lot easier to keep up with & it is a liquid.
I appreciate your support and hope she begins eating more & more :-D

Check with the vet about using a product like FortiFlora or plain yogurt to replenish the good bacteria killed off by the broad spectrum antibiotic. Using something like that, a couple of hours after the antibiotic, may reduce any GI upsets such as diarrhea or vomiting, plus help maintain appetite. Many cats really like FortiFlora and it is available online, generally for much less than at a vet's office.

Thanks, we have used FortiFlora in the past, I am going to try & get some again. You think the yogurt is okay with the 24 hour antibiotic? I knew with the 12 hour ones to give 2 hours after, you think the 24 hour is the same? Thanks BJM!
