Clavamox... a little help?

Hey there. My big boy has wounds on his hind legs, was prescribed Clavamox. I'm concerned about the dosage that the vet prescribed him. Every site I've read says the regular dosage is 62.5 mg (1 pill) 2x a day, for a total of 125 mg.

This vet prescribed Mr.Kitty 93.75 mg (1.5 pills) 3x a day, a total of 281.75 mg. More than twice the recommended dosage.
Vet says Mr.K's infection is penetrating raised scar tissue that is forming, and he thinks that the rigorous antibiotic treatment will be our best best to really attacking the infection. All this sounded good until I gave Mr.Kitty his second dose of Clavamox. He is very tired, has no appetite (EXTREMELY unusual for my big orange cat), and just all around feeling like crap. No unusual behavior all week while we tried to manage the wound without antibiotics, and now 3/4 of a day into Clavamox he is obviously not feeling well. I am worried.

Side note, this is not our usual vet, but this vet was the only one available to see Mr.K. I don't always trust what vet's say when it comes to prescribing pharmaceuticals based on the many bad (sometimes awful) reactions I've seen my kitties and dog have from a ill-prescribed medication.

Anyway, does anyone have any advice? Has anyone else who's used Clavamox been in the same situation or experienced similar troubling side effects? I am so scared to overdose my little guy. Supposed to give him his next dose now, but it just does NOT feel right and I feel like I should trust my instinct until I can speak with the vet in the AM. Thank you to any and all input.

I don't have any experience using Clavamox at those dosages, but I say trust your gut! If it doesn't feel right, don't do it, wait until you can talk to your regular vet!

Thank you for that info. He weighs 13.5 lbs so by that each dose should be about (1) 62.5 mg tablet. I get why the vet wanted to up/increase the dosage, his reasonings being that the infection is in this raised scar tissue that has formed from the lesions which requires a extra strong antibiotic "fight". But still it doesn't seem safe to overdose a cat, what, almost 150%???? Especially with the reaction he had. Hmm.

with a 20 mg/kg dose that would be 122 mg twice daily so 93 mg twice daily is within the 10-20 mg/kg dosage. The 10-20 is twice daily
Right, but the vet prescribed me to administer the 93.75 mg dose 3x a day, every 8 hours. He had already taken 187.5 mg within a ~14-16 hour time period, and he was acting/appearing very ill. So I was just wondering if anyone else has been prescribed this high of a dose of Clavamox antibiotics for their cat and could share their experience because at the moment feeling like it is abnormal and maybe dangerous because he was showing signs of overdose as advised on all the websites I found which was nausea and lethargy, but also a complete loss of appetite.

I never heard of TID dosing for Clavamox for cats. The Vet Drug Handbook only says BID dosing for cats but TID dosing for one condition (gram negative bacteria) for dogs

If it were me, if I thought the drug was the cause of the loss of appetite I would stop it. Not eating in a cat is very dangerous. I have had my vet discontinue antibiotics for diarrhea before, so I am sure he would tell me to discontinue if they quit eating. Again, just in my opinion, if it were me, I wouldn't give any more and talk to your regular vet. You cant have him feeling this way for the whole course of antibiotics.
I would ask about Zeniquin, it's a hard core antibiotic that treats skin wounds. Ask if that would be appropriate. ECID, but Zeniquin is the only antibiotic Katie can take that doesn't cause digestive problems.

I can't speak to dosage either, but in my lifetime I have had 4 cats that just could not take Clavamox. Just last week one of our cats took it for the first time and with just one dose she stopped eating, vomited, and just looked like death (just giving a mental image...she wasn't *literally* dying). We stopped it immediately and never gave the second dose, but it still took about 4 days of eating bland food and giving her fluids to look bright again. Oh, and we did switch her to Zeniquin just like @katiesmom. I think Clavamox, while a good broad spectrum, is often hard on the GI system.

Sandi.

My guys feel icky on clavamox too-
My Dr doses by weight ....
my little guy gets 62.5 but Dre is 19 pounds and his dose was 125mg BID
We prefer azithromycin as it seems easier on the tummy and 1x a day.
When I did need to use clavamox I gave ondansetron and cerenia to try and prevent the nausea.
Good luck :)

My vet put Callie's on Clavamox for a UTI. She said to be sure to give it with food and to watch out for digestive problems. I would follow my gut feelings. Try to get him into his regular vet, or a different vet for another opinion. In the meantime. I would stop giving it.
