I'm full of questions today. Ever since I started feeding my two kitties, Simba & Shadow (Simba is diabetic) Classic Fancy Feast (Off of dry food since 6/13/11), I've noticed that they really strain to have a bowel movements. The stool seems hard.

I hope you don't think this conversatin is weird, but I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this ?.

I don't think your converstation is weird. I've been posting about and talking to my family, friends, and people at work about poop for over 2 weeks, now. I think my J.D. recently had poop issues because of stress. Have Simba & Shadow had any stress lately? Do you add extra water to their canned food?

I bet the dry food had a lot of fillers in it, which produces bigger poop. One thing that raw feeders notice, that the poops are very small and hard (and far less smelly!). So canned food, with less waste, could also be smaller and harder. Adding extra water so that the canned food is a little soupier may help.

If the cats are really straining, stop by the pharmacy and pick up a very small bottle of Miralax. A little goes a long way. Just a sprinkle of this will keep water in the stool so it doesn't get so dry and hard. Many of us with constipation prone cats swear by Miralax. I have a neural-injury boy and the Miralax is just wonderful -- he doesn't even notice it in the food.

good luck,
laur

Yes, the poop is smaller and yes, I just realized that it doesn't smell as much as before when they were on dry food. I think if I add water to the wet food they will not eat the wet food. They are both being so damn picky on the Classic Fancy Feast lately.

So I sprinkle the Miralax in the wet food ? - If so, I may try this. I really don't want my boys to have constipation issues now since I changed their diet. Thank you so much for the info.

Is Miralx "fragrance free?" Midora had consipation issues her entire life (that's why she was fed Prescription Diet W/D dry), but I would buy her some chicken some times, gave her a little mineral oil in a pinch - she also ate fancy feast. I could not put human fiber powder in her food - she smelled it and would not eat it.

I have noticed the same with Cedric. I have caught him dragging his buns on the carpet a couple of times.
