My civvie 2 year old female has had diarrhea for two days. Now she has a mucous discharge coming from her rectum. What could be causing this?
I am taking her to the vet but my regular vet is on vacation and I do not have much faith in the ones that are in. She has not eaten anything different or gotten into anything that I know of. She is still eating and drinking.

possibilities include:
inflammatory bowel disease / colitis
partial obstruction (what can get through is liquid)
hepatitis (liver upset)
food allergy (these can develop to something previously tolerated)
cancer

Q: How are the 5 Ps - eating, drinking, peeing, pooing, purring?

Came home to poop all over the house. She is now is a bathroom. She is still eating and drinking so far. I have never seen anything like this before, its like she has had an enema. What a mess. No vomiting yet though.
The vet gave her metronidazole for this but I am reading this is not approved for use in cats. None of my cats have ever been on this before.

Metronidazole may be helpful in cats with inflammatory bowel disease.
I gave it to Spitzer and it did seem to help.

Hi Terri-

I am really sorry...I hope the meds help clear this right away. Let's hope it's just some bug she has. Merlin gets a bug every once in a while and it goes away. I hate liquipoo!

Hi Traci,

It finally stopped for now thank goodness. The only other time I had such a mess was when they gave Andy(GA) an enema and I brought him home after. I hated putting her in the bathroom all night. But I would have had a mess. I wish I knew what caused this, I don`t know if she got into something or if its going to be an ongoing problem. Hope not. I felt so sorry for her, she would cry every time I wiped her rear end, I know it was sore.
BJ, Thanks for your help too.

Raw food will also make the diarrhea go away if it's some sort of IBD. You can get a free sample from Feline's Pride, or by the kind from Petco--Nature's Variety Instinct frozen.

The first thing I though when I read this was "chocolate". My civvie, Mullet, ate a few pieces of dark chocolate a couple of months ago, and he suffered two days of liqui-poo that was miserable for him (and me). I didn't have to give him anything for it, and it went away in 48 hours or so (but only because he didn't eat much of it - it would have been much more serious had he eaten more). Any chance at all that might have happened?

Carl

If you have to swab a sore area, put a small amount of vegetable oil on the wipe. It will help keep the area protected from the excessive moisture and friction from rubbing, and should be non-toxic to the cat (if corn allergy, obviously don't use corn oil!)
