My 14 yr. old civvie Kiah has been failing for some time and I'm ashamed to admit it because of bad times (bankruptcy etc.) I did not take her in. I'm assuming CRF (diarrhea, weight loss, sunken in at hips). There had been no vomiting.

I had to take my DB Jesse in last Monday so I took her too because she started crying and would not eat (and I realized I couldn't just do NOTHING for her). I got fluids (100cc/day). Albon was prescribed for Jesse so the vet said to try it on her too. I barely got 1/2 cc in her due to her distress and a couple hours later she threw it up. The vet had looked in her mouth and said it looked good.

I have been syringing her A/D and wellness. I thought she was nauseous because she was licking her lips but Pepcid did not help. A few times during the week she would lick at the food. I realize now that her mouth hurts her. Even when I approach with the syringe she does a bleh, bleh, bleh thing with her tongue. I tried to make a syrup of Slippery Elm Bark which is supposed to help mouth sores but it didn't turn syrupy. I found another recipe that uses less water and more SEB which I will be making.

I called my vet on Friday because I read where cats with CRF can get mouth ulcers but that they are treatable. My vet would not prescribe anything and said the next thing we would have to do is a full blood panel.

Is there anyone with any experience with this that can offer me some guidance? I know she is approaching the end, but I want to try and help her be more comfortable. She hasn't indicated that she's ready to go.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Re: Civvie CRF (?) Mouth Hurts - Can anyone help?

Oral Ulcers
Mouth and tongue ulcers, common in CRF cats, can cause discomfort and may prevent a cat from eating, thus causing substantial weight loss. In some cases, ulcers may extend into the esophagus. There may be an indicative odor from the cat's mouth. The mouth should be checked frequently by you and your veterinarian. Antibiotics and human ulcer medications (compounded to cat-size dosage) are available to heal mouth ulcers.

I would talk to your vet.

Carolyn i am so sorry little Kiah is feeling bad.
He may not be approaching the end and maybe you can help him.
Did the vet check him good.
What was the Albon for? I didn't understand about that.

I can tell you that mouth ulcers are extremely painful so Kiah probably needs pain medication
and something for nausea and a good antibiotic.
The Vet looked in his mouth and said it was ok?
Reminds me of a vet i saw once.
I had a sweet little outside cat named Patches.
She didn't come around for 3 days and when she came again she had lost weight and wouldn't eat. I took her to this "vet " she checked her over, looked in her mouth and said she was ok.
Vet said it was time for Patches boosters and gave her the shots and also gave a B12 injection.
Said to just watch Patches.
I brought her home and she followed me around and just kept looking at me.

The next day i took her to another vet and this vet looked in her mouth and said,
"Oh my God!" Vet said Patches mouth and throat were covered in sores and blisters.
She was in a lot of pain.
I would go to another vet if you can because this vet told you her mouth was ok.
I cannot understand how a vet can do this.

Re: Civvie CRF (?) Mouth Hurts

Thanks for the replies. Took her back to the vet and blood work shows CRF - 80% function gone. Re-examination of her mouth shows nothing (I saw for myself). Supporting her with fluids and syringe feeding when she won't eat on her own.
