Hi
My cat Nell age 12 is having a dental this week. She is in very good health, recent blood work was great! Her weight is good, etc.
She has FORL's however (so called "kitty cavities") and will probably need to have a few more teeth pulled.

The tech wrote up the estimate and included a shot of Convenia. I am NOT going to allow them to give her that, however I wonder, is it TRULY necessary for a cat having a dental to get any type of antibiotics if they are going to have extractions?

she has no heart murmur, she is in really good shape physically.

I know in people, you get pre medicated with anti biotics if you have mitral valve prolapse or if you have artificial joints, and for other various reasons, but otherwise healthy people do NOT get antibiotics to get teeth pulled.

Why are we giving them to our cats, other than the obvious- cats are not people, and people are not cats LOL

To be truthful, she was sent home with Clindamycin the last two times she had teeth pulled and I just wasn't able to get even a single full dose into her. She's ok, nothing awful happened, but I don't know if it's because we just got lucky, or because nothing bad is even likely to occur when you don't give a healthy cat antibiotics during and after (and sometimes before) a dental.

Has **anyone** ever heard of a cat having a problem who was not given antibiotics?

The vet did give my cats Convenia for dentals once in the past, before I knew anything about it.
Is there a safe alternative, a shorter acting injectable antibiotic, that she could be given at the time of the dental?

what's the current thinking on antibiotics and cat dentals?

Larry - thanks for posting those links.

Here is an excerpt from one of them:

In addition to my gripe about Convenia in general, the boarded dentists on VIN speak out day in and day out about how cats do NOT normally need antibiotics post-dentals anyway!! Even when extractions have been done. And then to pick and antibiotic like Convenia....makes them (and me) crazy.

The tech wrote up the estimate and included a shot of Convenia.

This truly makes me want to cry. This is NOT sound medical practice! And I sure wish that there was a way of conveying this to your vet to keep other patients from being treated in this manner.

This is a very hot button of mine because of "Einstein"...a consulting patient of mine that almost died because of a shot of Convenia post routine-dental. ~$6K later...and a 1 week stay in the emergency/critical care unit......he pulled through.
