After more testing, Cindy has been diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy (meaning the walls of her heart are thicker and not as flexible as they should be), chronic mild pancreatitis and yes, acromegaly. I'll be moving her to Levemir because of that and, of course, doing a crash course on what our options are.

The internal medicine vet will be emailing me the results and documentation he was sent by the folks at MSU. He said that the normal range for the IGF-1 is between 12 and 92 and at 369, she is clearly outside the range of normal. The pancreatitis could be contributing to the higher number but not enough to cause the number to be that high.

I'm so sorry to hear that. The high dose peeps will take good care of you.

But please keep us updated once in a while too. Good luck in the future to you and Cindy.

I was just thinking about you guys last night - wondering how things were going. Sorry to hear the news but in many ways it is good news that you know what you are dealing with and can now take aggressive action. And mom deserves a real big :thumbup for having the fortitude to get down to the bottom of things.

H had pancreatitis and it did not make his BG higher. However it did make him go through appetite swings which DID effect his BGs. So that is likely something you need to stay on top of. Also making sure the fat content is of a medium range content - like 35-45% - probably not much higher than 45% if you can. If you get adventurous, that's why I developed H's home cooked "food improver." Also I found the SubQ fluids helpful for the pancreatitis on a as needed basis when he would have a flare. You should ask your vet about that and how that would work in conjunction with her heart condition.

I have subQ fluids on hand as she has needed them for her bouts and our IBD cat, if he starts vomiting a lot, will need them. What a life-saver they are!

Cindy is eating pretty much only Fancy Feast classics so I think we're good as far as the fat. The IBD cat eats duck and venison and she looks at me like I've flipped my lid if I offer any to her. Maybe she knows that the duck just isn't for her? :)

Hi Debbie and Cindy,
Welcome to the high dose / acro / IAA club.
I know the news is not exactly what you want to hear but it sure is good to know what's going on.

(((((hugs))))) hopefully the diagnosis will help you in decision making & treatment

hope she is feeling ok & doing even better soon! :-D

Wishing you and Cindy all the best as you move forward in your journey! Empower yourself with knowledge. You will do great things for her, and you already have!
