I might be too late here, Steph. This is a time when giving a token dose, say 30- 50% of regular could be the way to go rather than trying to decide on a dose that's safe but closer to what you've been giving. At least he'd be getting some insulin.Holy cow! I have no idea what I should do. He is 166 at +11. We are going out of town tonight.
My options are:
1: Feed him then test/shoot in 2 hours like we did this morning.
2: Feed him and give him a dose now.
I have no idea what dose. I would be here for 2 hours after his shot if I do it at +12.
If I do option 1 I will be here 1 hour after his shot.
I feel like option 1 is better but would probably lower the dose a bit from this mornings shot.
He isn't going with us. He is going to be home with our housemate who gives him snacks when I'm not home and has been here when I'm steering him. I trust that he can handle a hypo incident.I might be too late here, Steph. Is he going out of town with you? If not, who''s looking after him? You don't want to leave him with a sitter who might not be able to handle too low a BG number later.
Sounds like a good plan, Steph. He isn't going with us. He is going to be home with our housemate who gives him snacks when I'm not home and has been here when I'm steering him. I trust that he can handle a hypo incident.
I have left .5oz chicken & broth baby food plus 1oz water for a snack at +3 and .5oz chicken for +6.
He was 330 one hour after his meal.
2 hours after meal was 409. He was given 4.8 units. The snacks alone might put him in yellow for AMPS.
Housemate will check him hourly to see if he is responding to calls and food noises. If he doesn't he is going to check his BG. My gut is telling me he will be fine.
In the morning if he is blue again I want to try 2 units. If it's not enough I can add at +2 like I was planning to split up the 5.4... My theory is if he is doing great on a 5.6 on 600+ reading... 4.8 on a 330ish. 2 units should be plenty safe enough for a token dose. But couldn't risk it tonight. I trust Augie (housemate) can handle it but I don't want to risk it.
