When Boris showed up on my back porch, he was beat up and limping. When I asked my vet about it (6 years ago now), he said as long as it doesn't impede his mobility, he's eating and drinking okay, then we shouldn't worry about the limp. Boris seemed to get along fine, so we left it at that.
Fast forward to his April ER visit for DKA, pancreatitis, and DM... As part of his exam in the ER, they did an abdominal x-ray, where they discovered he had a crushed femur neck on his back right leg (that old injury). They started him on 0.5cc gabapentin BID to manage the pain. I can tell you he moves much, much better, and he's started chasing/harassing his brothers (much to their chagrin). He's a much different cat.
The thing is, I don't like leaving him on pain meds indefinitely if we don't have to. And I really don't like that for the first 3-4 hours after he gets his gabapentin, he's out cold. I want him to have the pain relief, but I don't like the side effects. PLUS I've read that his body can get used to it, which would rule out the use of gabapentin as he ages, when he might need the relief more (especially if arthritis starts to set in in that leg).
Now that his BG seems to have stabilized, I'm looking for alternatives. CBD oil? Glucosamine chondriotin? Maybe just a reduced dose of gabapentin so he's not snowed for hours after being dosed? I want him to have the same kind of pain relief he's getting now, but don't want to deploy the big guns just yet in case they're needed down the road.
Thanks!
