Hello, it’s been a couple weeks, but I wanted to update about Chloe and check in to get some opinions on his situation. I’ve read some previous threads about remission and wonder if we’re heading that way, but I don’t want to rush it…maybe I already have by not giving him insulin since 11/21. I’ve just wanted to gather more data and see what’s going on for him.

His spreadsheet is current and his numbers have been mostly in the “normal” range, from what I have read. But I’m wondering if he ever needs a drop of insulin or some other tiny dose when his numbers are on the higher end of this range, like the past few days have shown. I think I’ve seen that to support the pancreas I should be weaning him off insulin more slowly. Thanks for any thoughts!

My initial reaction was that you're close but not quite there yet. The big question for me, though, is whether you're still feeing Chloe dry food. If you are, what you're feeding him is very high in carbs. If there is any way to get him on a low carb diet, I suspect you will see his numbers in the lower end of the normal blood glucose range. There are only a couple of dry foods (Dr. Elsey's Clean Protein, Young Again Zero Carb) that are low in carbs.

Thanks. He is…we can start transitioning to wet food. Does it seem like we should be doing tiny doses of insulin in the meantime?

I would not reinitiate insulin and instead, switch over to a low carb diet. I'm concerned that if you restart insulin AND switch over to low carb, you will be dealing with very low numbers. We try to keep numbers below 120 (50 - 120 is normal range) prior to stopping insulin. Chloe's numbers are largely in that range. If restarted insulin plus low carb, I think it could be challenging. I suspect Chloe will be in normal range if you can feed him a lower carb diet. You also won't have to worry about hypoglycemia if you're not giving insulin.
