? chin acne?

Hi Kyle, in my collection of Kitties With Random Issues, I do have chin acne!
For Mew, the main trigger is plastic bowls and anything oily, so I had to change everything to stainless steel and ceramic years ago, and if she ever gets anything oily or with gravy, I wipe her chin with a cotton pad soaked in witch hazel after.

When she does have an outbreak, I have had the best luck using a shampoo recommended by my vet years ago, called Oxiderm +PS, which has since been discontinued (I'm holding on to my last bottle for dear life). Here are the ingredients: benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, salicylic acid and phytosphingosine. It works wonders.
I also had a friend who would shampoo her cat's chin with hibiclens, and had good results with that.
 
hmmm interesting, it did not occur to me that it could be something in his diet or environment which results in an outbreak. Thanks for the suggestions and advice!

Shylo is Hendrick's litter-mate btw, they were the last litter of an aging cat mom, just the two of them in the litter. How could I split them up and live with myself?? So both of them came home with me. My wife had NO idea lol. Surprise, kittens! I knew she would be thrilled, and she was beaming as expected.

Plastic bowls are notorious for triggering chin acne in cats. The theory is that minute scratches in the plastic harbor bacteria, but Mew would also get outbreaks from drinking in a plastic cat fountain even when it was brand new and clearly un-scratched, so who knows... I would start there if you are indeed using anything plastic.

Those kitten pictures are ridiculously cute! The last-two-kitten trap is dangerous... that's how I went from one to two pairs of siblings :p

we learned here at the FDMB about plastic, back in January of this year. Never knew before that. We eliminated all plastic food dishes and now use only ceramic or stainless steel.

Yeah it was a shock to the owner that the aging mother could even get pregnant any more, and then she had a small litter, just the two kittens - Shylo and Hen. That's what I meant, not that they were the last 2 of a larger litter. They are the only litter mates they've ever known.
 
Is Shylo a plastic licker, like plastic bags? That can cause chin acne and has for my Wiggle and Boots. They always used SS bowls.
YI tried Stridex pads and the acne cleared up.

Oh yeah I misread that the first time. Chewie and her brother Wicket were the two survivors of a litter of four abandoned at 4 weeks old on a parking lot without a momma cat. I fostered them and the other two kittens sadly died, so I couldn't fathom separating them, both from each other and from me.
 
I used Vetericyn when my cat had a bout with chin acne - which you can get on chewy fairly inexpensively and it cleared hers right up. I just put some on a little cotton round and used it a couple times a day until it was gone after probably a little less than a week.

ty! I found that product on Chewy yesterday and based on mainly positive reviews saying it works, I went and bought some. Glad to hear from another FDMBer though!
 
I just had this conversation with my vet last week as I wanted to know if polyester carpet might be a problem for my kitty with allergy and he said that it has not even been proven that plastic causes acne or other allergies.

that doesn't surprise me, most of the evidence I can find is anecdotal.
 
I had a cat that had acne and changed her dishes from plastic but she still continued to get it. It was many years ago and the vet I was using treated it with prednisone and Baytril. It’s a wonder she never got fd. I am sure it’s not treated like that today.
