I noticed yesterday that something seemed to be "off" with Chicken Little. She was eating but without the usual gusto and then last night I noticed she was licking herself a lot more than usual. The first thing that I thought of was a UTI and I went and checked her litter box. She had a normal pee in the box and a poop. I did think that the poop was smaller than usual and a little darker however it was nothing that looked alarming. This morning when I picked her up to do her test and shot I found that she has chewed her butt until it is a raw and bleeding pulp. She has pulled a lot of hair out as well. Its not actually her anus but its about at the 4 o"clock spot next to her anus. Its really hard to tell whats going on since it is so raw and bleeding. It looks terrible. If this were on my dog the first thing I would think it was is anal sac problems. I read on the internet that cats can have Anal Sac Problems just like dogs can.
I guess its hi ho hi ho off to the vet we go! Has anybody else heard of or had to deal with something like this?

Re: anybody know about Anal Sac Problems in Cats

Yes, cats can have anal sac problems.
Warm compresses may help loosen the material.
If impacted, it may require anesthesia to fully clean out.
If abcessed, it may require surgery to drain.

Re: anybody know about Anal Sac Problems in Cats

We are back from the vet and just as I thought it is a anal sac that has abcessed. He cleaned her up and gave her a Convenia Antibiotic injection and sent me home with Amoxi Drops with pain killer in them. He said that if she were not better by Tuesday then I was to bring her back and they would have to take a sample and send it off and see if it was cancer of the anal sac. He did say that only a small percentage of cats ever got cancer of the anal sac and that she more than likely just had a abcessed anal sac. He said that she should start feeling better by tomorrow and I should see a great deal of healing in the effected area by Tuesday. I can tell she feels bad but Ive done all that I can do for now. Later today when she is less stressed I'll try and put some coconut oil on the wound to help it heal. I feel so sorry for my hurting baby!!

Re: Chicken Little is home from the vet

Sending healing vines to poor Chicken Little and her very tender butt. Get better soon Chicken Little!

Re: Chicken Little is home from the vet

How about vaseline on it? Might help protect it. Or even some neosporin maybe ( maybe google this first as I dont know if there is an impact of neosporin down there)

If you do this, use vaseline not neosporin - only because she may and probably will lick down there and neosporin is not to be ingested.

I put vaseline on Maui's bottom and then cleaned off the excess so that there was less for her to lick and ingest.

Re: Chicken Little is home from the vet

We can put neosporin on the ears and not worry about ingestion? Or should we....?

Re: Chicken Little is home from the vet

Most cats can't lick their own ears....LOL

I think that we only use a dab and rub it in good, so to ingest the neosporin, they'd have to first rub it off their ears with their paws and then lick it off their paws. Unless you're using a lot, I don't think they're not going to get much that way

Re: Chicken Little is home from the vet

Thanks for the help. The vet told me to get baby wipes without anything in them to clean the area each day. He cleaned it yesterday so I'm going to have to do it in a little while. (Not looking forward to this!!) After I do then I will put some Vaseline on it. I did put coconut oil on it last night and I did not think that she would lick it because she hates it in her food and wont eat it however I was wrong. She may have licked the area no matter what I did however I'm still going to use the Vaseline today and see what happens. I can tell that she feels better today but her wound does not look any better. The vet did say that by Tuesday it should be healing so I guess I'm expecting to much to soon. My DH who never gets involved with whats going on with the critters remarked last night that her poor hind end looked terrible!! Maybe later today I'll try and do a warm compress. I dont know how well it will go over with CL because she dont want me touching her of course!! At the next meal time I'm going to spike her food with Rescue Remedy for pets and then give it a go on cleaning the wound!! Wish me much success!!

Ok I managed to clean the area with a baby wipe. It was still bleeding however I dont know if its bleeding from all CL's licking! I coated it with Vaseline and when I put her down she started licking it off faster than I put it on!! I have no way to stop her licking. I'm just hoping that all the meds will knock her out for a while!!
