Hi All,

My Tyrone is a diabetic with CHF (diagnosed at the same time). Recently, he's been into the emergency vet 3 times in the last month for having crisis episodes of his lungs filling up with fluid and not breathing well. These have all happened in the evening and on a Wednesday. He has bounced back the next day after each and he had a episode similar to this last fall. He is currently on Lantus (2u/2x a day), Furosimide (Lasix) - 1/2 pill Am, Full pill pm, Enapril, and Atenolol. We've been upping his does of Furosimide so these episodes will not happen again. My question for any other members who kitties have heart conditions if there is anything you've done to help if you have ever had these crisis episodes happen? I apologize in advance, I know my chart on here hasn't been updated. His numbers are typically pre shot in the mid 200's with the occasionally 300's and even in the 100's. Any suggestions??

Squeaker had one event of CHF which was steroid related. He had RCM, 2/6 murmur. Has Tyrone been evaluated by a board certified cardiologist?

Squeaker was put on Pimobendan, Torsemide (a stronger, compounded diuretic), low sodium diet; I also put him on CoEnzyme, L-carnitine, and Omega 3 Oil.

I was told that the prognosis is about 6 months but Squeaker lasted for 2 1/2 years and I just lost him at the end of January to CKD. Just one other tip from Squeak's cardio: cats with heart disease should not be given steroids as it can result in CHF.

Hi Anitafrnhamer,

Thank you so much for your response and the group link. My Tyrone has had CHF since April of 2014 and has undergone 2 echograms for his heart. The first was upon first diagnosis and the second was this past fall after his first pulmonary edema episode (fluid in lungs). The results showed no change in the heart. I currently feed him FF classics for his diabetes but do you have a better food that will still be good for his diabetes and also his heart? When he has had these last 3 edema episodes they give him treatment of an oxygen cage to aid in good breathing and an injection of lasix. We have been increasing his furomiside after each incident (under vet recommendation). I am praying that he done with these crisis episodes, was your torsemide hard on the kidneys? This is the reasoning they are inching up the does each time. Thank you for your time!
