I also posted a similar thread in health. Trying to get lots of opinions.

Charlie ate his dinner last nite at 10:30 (+5), and we gave him his liquid clavamox for his infected toe. He also ate his entire 1:30 am meal. Sometime between when we went to bed at 11 and woke up at 6:30 he puked up lots of food. I then rembered that he puked a lot last time he got clavamox (luckily we were able to treat that illness with ear drops, so ended up not needing the abs in the end). His amps was 484. He ate his whole breakfast (over an hour-he usually scarfs it down in about 10 minutes). I shot him his full dose (6.5u) about a half hour after he finished eating to make sure he kept it down. I didn't give him the ab's though. I'm not giving any more ab's till I talk to the vet tomorrow.

Should I switch ab's? Is there any that are gentler on the tummy? Has anyone else experienced puking with ab's? What did you do?

Sue was kind enough to hive me a link to an article on pilling by dr. Lisa. I've never used pills before.

1/4 tablet pepcid ac with the antibiotic may help, make sure it is AC only, do not get any other kind of pepcid. Clav is a notoriously tummy upsetting antibiotic. I don't know that switching antibiotics is wise, because different antibiotics treat different infections.. some of the other antibiotics that may treat the infection you're treating with clav could be "bigger gun" antibiotics, which sets him up for future antiobiotic resistance.

IMO you could ask the vet if they think the liquid form would be preferable to his tummy, and also ask the vet about the Pepcid AC. In the vet's office, they will have their version of pepcid ac, called famotidine, which is the generic of Pepcid AC, so they will probably recommend the same thing. The normally prescribed dose is 1/4tab every 12 hours but many of us find it needs to be done every 8 hours.

I would heavily advise against stopping the antibiotics. Once you do that, the infection will start to set up resistance against the clav, rendering it useless.

I talked to the vet. He told us not to use any more clavamox, and to come in to pick up another type of antibiotic-clindamycin. I hope that doesn't make him puke too! It's in another family of drugs so vet says a reaction to that would be unlikely. If he does gave a bad reaction though, he will need an antibiotic injection. Which is 3x the cost of these pills. Cross your paws!

Aside from high bgs and another insulin increase (7.5u now), he's very good. Thanks for asking! We picked up his new pills. I wrapped it in a tiny bit of a pill pocket and he scarfed it right down. That was 20 minutes ago. I hope it stays down! I'd hate to have him throwing up when I just upped his dose. I'll probably stay up a bit later and get a test in before bed.
