Changing from PetTest meter to Relion Prime human meter. The change is based on the fact that I am in need of strips but could not afford the $40 PetTest strips. So while I was at the store I picked up a human meter and strips. This may sound redundant and already answered before... but is there anything I need to know to make this switch easier and to better understand the numbers I will get?

I’ve heard that you can’t really compare numbers easily. When I switched to Relion last week I did a few double tests. One test with my alpha Trak and then one with the Relion. That way I could visually see the difference knowing that the numbers, while different were taken at the same time. That way my brain was able to start to make sense of the lower numbers. Other than that just knowing what is too high and what is too low on Relion compared to the pet meter was helpful.

I've never heard of PetTest, is it supposed to have the same numbers as an Alphatrak?

A human meter's non-diabetic numbers range from 50-120. A drop below 50 is a "take-action" number, as compared to 68 being the "take-action" number for Alphatrak.
I find it a lot easier using human meters anyway, since the forum is more widely designed to deal with them, since they run a little lower than Alphatrak.

Only thing you might want to do is switch your SS over to the human meter version, and make it obvious you've switched meters, like adding an extra cell row and putting in RELION PRIME. Perhaps @Bandit's Mom can help with the SS switch.

PetTest is another pet meter that is cheaper than alpha trak. Not sure how those two compare, but the vet was happy with it. I will get another Ss together once I figure out how to do that.

Ok so I just checked her BG on both meters to see the difference... on PetTest 498 and on Relion Prime 463. That makes it a 35 point difference. Now that I know that I can live with that.

Hi Debra, I can help you with switching your SS from pet meter to human meter. Have you decided to switch to a human meter?
I will need to give me Editor access on your SS. I will send you a PM with the details :)

Hi Debra, I am no specialist, but I am pretty sure the difference is not constant. The two meters should give you correlated reading, but it does not follow a line with a 1:1 correspondence. I hope this makes sense to you. I've spent days meassuring with both meters, and can give you assurance that human meter are equally accurate, but the best is just to forget the thresholds of the pet meter and just think in terms of the new human meter, so please accept Bhoorma's kind offer and your life will be much easier :)

I've already switched her SS to human meter a couple of days back and I think she is using that format now.
