Changing insulin

I finally decided to change Callie's insulin from Vetsulin to Prozink. She was doing fine for a while, but her numbers started jumping up and down and she was losing weight, even though I increased her food from 1/3 a can to 1/2 a can.

I wasn't sure what dose I should start her on. She weighs 8.2 lbs. The vet said to give .1 unit/lb. I gave her a little over .75 units. I am thinking that it will take some time to get the right dose and too little is better than too much.

So I guess I need to pack Callie's little suitcase and come over here.

Welcome! I hope ProZinc works better for her.

Was she most recently on 2 units? If so, 0.75 would be quite a bit less.but, as you say, too little can be better than too much. And you can increase fairly rapidly if she is in higher ranges. I am guessing you've read our stickies; if not, they are in my signature in blue. ProZinc acts very much like Canninsulin so it shouldn't be a hard transition in terms of how to dose. We'd just hope the cycles last longer.

We are a small, friendly forum. But if you ever have an emergency, post here and on Health so you get the most eyes. When looking for dosing help, posting here is best. People who don't use ProZinc are usually not comfortable giving dosing advice, so that advice is more likely here. It's a good idea to tag people who have given advice to you in the past. Posting daily with Callie's numbers and your questions is a good idea.

Can you either start a new ProZinc spreadsheet (best) or make a line above the line when you switched noting the change?

I updated my SS and put in a dividing line. I figured the dose was too low, but I wasn't sure if Prozink might be stronger. Last week, Callie's numbers went up because she got into some dog food, They stayed up longer then just dog food should have caused. I tried to figured out why. She didn't act like she had an infection, but her Vetsulin is older then I usually let it get. I started using it on 9-11. Anyway, I am hoping the new insulin will help. At least I won't be so concerned about feeding 30 min. before her shot. That can cause problems on busy days. I hope this will stop the early morning low numbers that have kept me up testing when I would have liked to be sleeping.

Thank you for the help.
