having a hard time switching my diabetic kitty to canned food. On insulin 2 x a day. Have another kitty who is okay. I only use holistic type food. No grocery store stuff, Purina, etc. Any ideas?

I see this is your first post - Welcome to FDMB.
There is a list of many of these along with the percent of calories from each of protein, fat, and carbohydrate posted at Cat Info right [url http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf]here[/url] along with information on feline nutrition.
Anything with less than 10% calories from carbohydrates can be used, and that does include a number of commercial foods such as Friskies Pates and Fancy Feast Classic Pates.
BUT - unless you are home testing the blood glucose, keep the food the same. Changing from high carb food to low carb food may reduce the glucose level as much as 100 mg/dL and may reduce the insulin needed by as much as 2 units.

Hi, I am from Wilmington,NC. My kitty is about 8 yo, male, orange tiger. He was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 years ago. I noticed the increased thirst and loss of weight, but he is a fat one! I use ProZinc insulin, 6 units twice a day. I buy my dog and cat food at "Unleashed" pet store. I am trying Go, Kiwi, etc. Having a hard time with transition. He also has urinary tract problems, blockage. He was on CD from vet but I stopped it due to the grain ingredients. Trying to get him to drink some raw goat's milk. I also have 2 dogs, Shih Tzu and Shih Tzu mix rescue from Mississippi. I have to watch the Shih Tzu because she will steal the kitty food. Caden (diabetic) is pretty good. Found him yesterday asleep by water bowl?????? He just had a frutosamine (?) level done and it was perfect. He is great getting his injection. All my crew get the best food (expensive) but worth it. I love my babies. Would love to hear from you.

With 14 cats in my condo and 3 strays in the complex maintenance garage, I feed Friskies pates. Its usually Turkey and Giblet or Poultry Platter. Yes, there is a slight bit of rice in it ... about what you might find in a mouse's stomach.

I just started Ziwi Peak Rabbit and Lamb - protein 10%, crude fat 7%, crude fiber 2%, moisture 78%, ash 2%, grain-free. This is from New Zealand. I also have Wild Calling! Cabin Fever 96% chicken and Go! Chicken, Turkey and Duck Pate. Hope this helps. I am trying to do the correct thing for all my babies. Caden is such wild one!

What you need to know is the percent of calories from each of protein, fat, and carbohydrate, not the percent weight. You won't find that on the label, ever. (*sigh*) And the label values all say a minimum or maximum of an ingredient; the batches actually change from time to time. You can make a guesstimate on those with some math, although most folks find the math off-putting.
Try putting those numbers into the calculator here and here to see what you get.
For cats (not humans), there are:
3.5 calories per gram of protein=
8.5 calories per gram of fat
3.5 calories per gram of carbohydrate
If you total the ingredients percentages by weight, they add up to 99; this leaves about 1% of the weight for carbohydrate.
