Hi I am new to this forum I have a 14 year old Siamese hand rear called Ozric he has been diabetic for about 4 years.Ozric is my own breeding i have been keeping Siamese for 24 years and breeding for about 18 years i had Ozrics mum and nan who I lost to old age bringing on kidney failure . He became diabetic due to a side effect of A medication for a infection on his chest. Since he has been diabetic he has never been very stable but we cope. The problem is Ozric has been on insuvet lente 100 iu/ml this has been taken of the market in the UK so I have now got him on caninsulin 40iu/ml the problems I am having is he is running high all the time and when i say hi I mean over 30 yes I know we have to keep upping the units till he adjusts the problem is every time I inject him his heart rate goes up and his right ear drops my vet has never seen this reaction before. Ozric has always had strange reaction to medication since he had his first jabs as a kitten but Ozric is getting on a bit now and this rapid heart rate is worry both for me and him. Ozric is my baby to the point that he still paddy paws me as he did when he was a week old he still trays to get in my top to fall to sleep listening to my heart as he always has since he was a tiny kitten can anyone shed any light on this reaction. Has anyone had to change insulin if so how long did it take to adjust can anyone help many thanks Rose and Ozric

Welcome Rose and Ozric (great name)!

The first thing I would suggest is for you to test his blood glucose levels at home, just like human diabetics do. That way you can see how the insulin is working - how low it takes him and how fast and how long it takes to get high again. Here is a video that shows you how: Video for hometesting We have taught hundreds of people how to test over the internet; we would be glad to teach you.

We have a number of GB members. I will see if they can stop by. Where are you in the UK?

Hi Sue and Oliver I have been testing Ozric at home ever since he got diagnosed maybe I did not explain myself very well sorry about that new to this forum lark thanks for you input though i appreciate it Rose and Ozric

Oh, fantastic! Can you tell us what kind of numbers you are seeing? Preshot and mid cycle? And what kind of food do you feed?

As far as Canninsulin goes, it is called Vetsulin in the US and Canada and is no longer prescribed here because of quality control issues. It does seem to be the most popular insulin in the UK. We have had several new members using it just in the last few days. Here is a guide: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=302

We do have people who did use it so I will see if I can get one of them to drop by. You might benefit from Carmen's latest post; she is using Canninsulin in the UK. viewtopic.php?f=28&t=36945

Hi Sue and Oliver in reply to your post since the change over 4 days ago Ozric has had a reading of hi this means he is above 30 when tested before insulin 6 hours after and last thing at night which is about 5 hours after insulin. Ozric has a diet of fresh roast chicken or tuna and Siamese 38 made by royal canine he has been on diet for years Ozric will regulate himself to a certain extent if he is running hi he docent eat much if any he knows when he should eat and when he shouldn't. Thank you for your help Rose and Ozric

Something you could do, Rose, to really help us out is to start a spreadsheet. We have a great document associated with the site that is color coded and easy to read. It will help you with trends and patterns and help us when you need dose help because we can see your history at a glance. Setting up a spreadsheet Be sure to pick the World Version - then you can input with metric numbers and we can see the US numbers when we view it. If you need help, just ask.

30 (multiplied by 18 for US number of 540) is high. Are you testing for ketones also? ketones

What kinds of numbers were you getting on Lente? With Canninsulin, they usually drop around 3-5 hours after the shot, so you might try getting a reading then.

Hi Sue and Oliver

I am rushing for work at the moment but if Caninsulin doesn't work then you CAN change to another insulin. I would think Lantus may be mentioned because although Levemir is the prefered now it seems the powers that be in the UK are well behind the rest of the world - sighs...... Vets should and can follow the 'cascade' route which means if one type of insulin doesn't work (and caninsulin seems the only option for animals) then they should prsecribe another (i.e human). If your little chap is reacting badly I would talk to your vet and tell him you want to change over.

I'm sorry this is rushed but if you want to chat please PM me and I will catch up later today. Take care

(BTW - I am in the UK (Norfolk)

PS!

You 'may' still be able to get Lente online although stocks might have run out. The vet can give you a prescripyion. Search around under animal medicines.
