Cerenia Dosing

i often see questions about dosing of Cerenia and have read that cats don't absorb it as much in pill form and thus need a larger dose. Since the sub-q shot stings I always used the pills. Here's a professional article about this.

Vets need to rethink this, it's never worked for me in pill form and then I get a blank look like I'm doing it wrong.

What dose were you giving? It needs to be higher than they first thought if given as a pill. I mostly used ondansetron and even that required a larger dose.

It's been quite a while and with cats that had problems much deeper than a lack of appetite, ulcers in one case, cancer in another. My thought was isn't there a variation of this drug, or a long lasting shot that would be more effective. And the usual "Do you know how to pill a cat?"

Since Rico does not get fluids anymore I give the oral cerenia-it works for him and I am experimenting with a lower dose as he gets it 5 days on 1 day off-
I started at at 8mg and am at 6mg now but I am going to try 4mg as he gets it almost every day-no vomit since we started and I know there is no evidence of this but it seems to be a appy stim for him.

I have the injectable ondansetron if I ever do need to do a injection (as well as reglan)

So glad I bought that 150$ bottle of injectable cerenia (although once in a while Dre gets it)

I think dosing depends on the size of the cat and the cause of the nausea. A cat with cancer would likely need a higher dose for example than a cat with nausea from antibiotics or stomach acid. It's another case of ECID and experimenting to find the best dose. I agree less is more. When an appetite stimulant is needed then nausea is likely not well controlled for example.
