So day 4 of insulin (ProZinc at 1u, twice per day) and Sam just got his lowest number ever! 133!!! The first three days didn't seem to be doing much. If anything his numbers were a little higher than normal (although I hadn't been testing mid-cycle before, so who knows). I was pretty excited to test a bit ago and see such a good number!

Here's my question: The vet said I just need to test mid-cycle right now since his dose is so low, and that it's okay to skip the pre-shot test. Sam does NOT tolerate the testing very well. He doesn't seem to mind the shots though, so that's great. I'm wondering what others think about that. Is it really safe to just shoot him without checking first, based on the low dosage level?

Also, on Monday I go back to work and won't be able to do the mid-cycle testing anyway. So then pre-shot will be just about the only time I'll be able to test him. So then what about if he drops during the day? Ugh! There is so much to learn about all of this!!!

The vet said to do a full curve on him on Day 5 (tomorrow) so I'll hopefully have a clearer picture after that.

Okay, that was more than one question. Feel free to respond to any part of that, or just send me to a thread that already addresses them. I know from reading on here that just about everything has been discussed somewhere, it's just a matter of finding it!

Hi Djamila,

Very pleased for you that Sam is responding well to his insulin. :)
Is it really safe to just shoot him without checking first...
No.

I've not used Prozinc but I do know that the FDMB protocol uses a sliding scale of dosage and the pre-shot blood glucose level is needed to determine how much to give. There is an active Prozinc insulin support group here which would be a great place for you to learn more about Sam's insulin. There's a link to the group from the main forum page. They should be able to help you with working out the safest dose to give while you're at work, too.

@Djamila, congrats on good numbers!

You can also post a question in the Prozinc forum and people who are more experienced with Prozinc will be able to help you. I did use Prozinc but only very briefly, and that was before I found this board so I didn't know what I was doing. o_O

Good luck, and I'm so glad Sam is responding well to the insulin!
