Cat won't eat

Hi, I just joined the forum and I've been so overwhelmed I haven't even had time to read all the info yet but have done research. My cat, Lucy, came home two nights ago from a 5 day stay in the Vet ER Hospital where I found out she had diabetes and pancreatitis. Her blood glucose was 400 when i took her in and she had been lathargic and going down for 3 days. My vet gave her an antibiotic shot the first day and told me to give it time to work but on the 3rd day he said to take her to the ER (wish I'd just gone sooner!) Anyway, she finally came home on 1ml of lantus. She's refused to eat this entire time on her own. They sent me home with food to syringe feed her.

I took her to my new vet after one day to do a glucose check and 8 hours after insulin her BG was only 49 so she told me to half the dose. Well at 730 that night I found I couldnt give the half dose with the syringe i had so called the hospital and they said no insulin til testing the next am. I dont have a test meter yet but will get one today. Her BG was 421 this am so my vet said to still give .5ml dose.

The main issue is that she won't eat on her own so she's hard to stabilize. I've offered all types and kinds. She did lick the Fancy feast last night once, she's drinking water, grooming herself and peeing and pooping on her own. The vet said it may come down to how much she is willing to fight to live as I can't keep feeding her with a syringe indefinitely.

I'm so upset with all this. I love my cat but I wish the ER hosp had told me what i could be in for. I paid them $5000 to get where we are now, plus now nearly $300 for Lantus, 2 vet visits, etc. I know the time to give up would have been in the beginning but I no idea what it would be like.

I've had cats and dogs for many years and have nursed some thro hard things but nothing like this. Just don't know what to do.

Hi ,
welcome to the FDMB! I am sorry for the Dx.
But I wanted to let you know that my cat refused to eat once and was fit with Esophageal tube for roughly 4 - 6 weeks - it saved her life.
Has the vet ever mention a possibility?

With your permission I am going to strongly recommend you start testing BG at home on the regular basis. That BG 49 is way too low, esp for a none eating kitty. Please let me know if you are willing - I can give you my shopping FD list - all from Walmart and inexpensive.

Thanks that would be helpful. I will start testing at home today. I dont know about the feeding tube, if I would want to go that route.

I use Walmart brand of human glucometer Relion Micro but you can get Relion Confirm or Relion Prime - the later requires larger blood sample to read but twice cheaper strips. You'll need
one of the meters - $10 - 15,
a box of 100 testing strips $35,
a box of Lancets Relion gauge 26 - 28 to start $1.40,
a pack of cotton balls/ rounds to hold behind the ear whilst testing $3,
Neosporin Ointment ( better than cream) with pain reliver $4.

Because cats on a dose can go dangerously low you'll need to keep available some high carbs. When you are in Walmart get a few cans of Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers - a few 2.8 oz cans each flavor - FF Gravy Lovers Chicken Feast & Beef Feast $0.60 ea. These are not for daily feeding, only to raise the BG quickly IF the cat is too low, and Karo Syrup (baking goods isle) or Honey.

I use Relion insulin syringes that have half unit markings on its barrel - ask a pharmacist in Walmart if they carry it.
Here is the link for you to review - it talks about low BG and how to apply Honey or Karo.

I understand but in case you'll have to go there please know that in reality it is sooo much easier to handle - honestly, it is the case when it is as easy to do as it is to say.

Lucy's not eating might be explained by nausea . A typical nauseated behavior is when they lick or sniff the food but would not eat it.
A small dose of Cerenia pill, anti nausea/ vomit pet meds available from vets ( it going to be significantly cheaper from your vet v. ER clinic).
There are other meds to help with non eating cat - please keep asking any question! A lot of practical knowledge is available thru this Board.

Some cats would eat if their food is slightly heated - to increase the aroma.
Some would go if you sprinkle a little of Parmesan Cheese of top of their food.
ere are some suggestion about appy stimulation. http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/suggestions-on-how-to-stimulate-kittys-appetite.130770/

Pancreatitis is painful and often a pain killer pills in combination with anti nausea and appy stimulant are given.
Did they release him home with any meds?
How was her hydration level when at the clinic?
