Months ago I posted about my cat Rasta. The vet believed she had diabetes but we didn't have the money for them to test her. My BF is also diabetic so we check her our selfs. She wasn't diabetic but still had something going on.

I put a ad on Craigslist asking for help/someone to take her. I couldn't find her a home but did find a nice lady that spent a lot of money on getting tests done. The tests came back saying her had pancreatits and liver elevations. The vet told us she'd have to be on a special diet for a few weeks and would be all better. Later a different vet told me she'd have to be on that diet permanently. Which vet do I believe?

The diet they had us give her was Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Selected Protein Adult PR Canned Cat Food. It's not cheap we can't pay 3 dollars a day per cat atm. The lady was nice and also got us a few boxes of it but we ran out and I wanted to see if she'd do ok without it she was doing ok but not she’s starting to act sick again.

That same lady really likes Rasta but has 5 cats of her own so can’t take Rasta for us. She has been trying rescues but non are willing to take Rasta in. We really need to find her a home that can care for her. If anyone knows someone that can help around the Detroit area can you let me know?

As Rasta doesn’t like cats and we have other cats she’s had to be locked away in the bathroom and she really hates it.

--------------------------------------------------------About Rasta --------------------------------------------------------

Rasta is the sweetest cat. She always wants to cuddly with you and she never wants to be away from you. She’ll even latch on to you like a little monkey if you pick her up. She LOVES dogs almost as much as humans but doesn’t like cats. She’s never been around kids but doesn’t mind rough handling. She’s very playful but her favorite thing really is just lying with you at the pc or on the bed.

--------------------------------------------------------My questions --------------------------------------------------------
pancreatits and liver elevations.

1: The vet told us she'd have to be on a special diet for a few weeks and would be all better. Later a different vet told me she'd have to be on that diet permanently. Which vet do I believe?

2: The put her on Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Selected Protein Adult PR Canned Cat Food. Is there anything cheaper that would still work for her?

3: We really need to find her a home that can care for her. If anyone knows someone that can help around the Detroit area can you let me know?

Let me know if you have any thoughts or can help in anyway.

Thank you

I have a cat, Shita, that has an under active thyroid. She needs no special diet but she takes a low dose thyroid pill everyday. I think it costs about $35 a year. You do want to take care that she isn't allowed to just eat at will as weight gain can be a problem.

Just what was the diagnosis? The prescription food you listed is typically one for an allergy to things in commercial food.
Do youhave any written information from the vet you can post here?

My girl is a very small cat about 5lbs. She also is on the thin side.

I have the test papers from the vet but I'm not sure how to read the stuff myself. I was told to give her that food or just boil(i believe she said boil) her chicken.

Have the Chemistry and Hematology test results. As to what the vet said was the problem and what to do about it I'd have to call and ask for the info as it was all verbal with no printed info on it.

*more info*
I also forgot to add before we got her to the vet she was asking very tired. Very dehydrated. Losing weight. Was throwing up a lot and had yellow poo.

OK My fault its pancreatitis sorry. and liver elevations.

Anyway to edit the title of the post?
Sorry about that I have it in my head as it was what was believed to be wrong before we got the tests.

Pancretitis is not that uncommon. The usual treatment is subQ fluids, pain meds, an anti-vomiting med like Cerinia. Some vets say a lower fat diet helps too.

Does it go away or will she always have it? Is there any types of cat food I can buy at the store that will work very these cans from the vets. She liked the cans at 1st but really started to did like them after a pack or two.

Chemistry and Hematology tests.

My MurrFee had pancreatitis and after a about a weeks he wa almost back to his own self and in a couple of weeks back to normal. No special food. At first I was feeding anything he would eat. The subQ fluids, anti-vomiting meds and pain meds are important at the beginning.
How is Rasta now with restect to eating and vomiting? Is she maintaining her weight?

She started to gain weight right after getting on the can food. She had about 60 cans/days of the can food. After about 12 I tried putting her back on the normal food and she started getting sick again. She got down with the 48 cans a few weeks ago and yesterday and today is throwing up again. She got down to around 4lb when it started now shes back around 5lb 9oz and has been staying there. Shes a little dehydrated again.

Hi there,

Here are the IDEXX guidelines for pancreatitis treatment. I believe that Cerenia can help with nausea when vomiting is present. Drugs like famotidine can help if excess stomach acid is a problem in the beginning and, as Larry mentions above, pain medication can help. (All detailed in the IDEXX document). Vitamin B12 supplementation can help a lot, too. The trickiest aspect of managing pancreatitis that I have found has been trying to find a food that will agree with Saoirse. Pancreatitis may be acute (a single episode that resolves with treatment) or chronic (ongoing - needs management with the right foods and, when necessary, supportive medications, fluids, etc.).

To help with dehydration, mix some water in with her meals. Also, try feeding lots of small meals (timed feeders are a godsend for this).

@phlika29 - Sarah, is there any chance you might post a link to the Yahoo Pancreatitis Support Group for Rasta's mom, please?

Rasta's mom - if you join the Yahoo group they might be able to help you with food choices that can help with pancreatitis that are more affordable than prescription foods.

Thank you for your reply.
I'll join the group (after i get there name) if you believe they can help. Anything that will make Rasta happier.

We would really like to help her she is really a very sweet cat but ultimately we still will need to find her a new home we have other cats and she hates them all. So she has to be locked in the bathroom sadly. Lately shes been digging at the door wanting out. Every time I try letting her out she attacks are FHC cat. She also is now attacking our male cat to. She LOVES over us and our dogs tho. I've tried everything to help them get a long, feeding them with each other ect. It worked for a time she would be ok with them around not attacking but growling at them.

We also still don't have any money to care for them my mom has been paying for there care along with the lady that volunteered to help get Rasta to a vet. We have been waiting on my BF to get SSDI and were told we my still have till mothers day. To call them after that if we haven't heard anything. We also had are furnaces die a few days ago so have been trying to keep the place worm with space heaters still getting down to 61-65 inside.

Anyway my point any and all help would be very appreciated. Were so down by all the stuff on top of other stuff we just can handle it all to well and seeing Rasta unhappy doesn't help. We HATE keeping her locked away more so now that shes crying for us almost all night. :(

Thank you. And I hope I didn't make you feel bad with that. Everyone has hard time at some point. I'm just hoping for a break from it for a little as some point lol. A lot of our problums is we had to move out of my mom and dads house with in a few weeks notice and had no money so got in to a really bad house. Bad for more then a few reasons. Then my BF back getting to the point he got fired didn't help. But hey we still got a roof right even if it leakys or that's what I like to say anyway. :p Also I'm very lucky my mom is willing to help with the pets. Hopefully before mothers day comes around we will here from SSDI and be in a little better place.

It really is a pain more so when you can't do anything other then think about it over and over. My BF can't even walk from the house to the street with me because of his back. So I get to walk by myself/with my dogs to try to clear my head but he can't even get out of the house or then the few times we get rides to the doc/store. :/
My anxiety to is bugging me with the fact are furnace bored burned. They yesterday one of are 6way plugs burned where my power bar was plugged in and only a few hours ago a 2nd power cord plugged in to a different 6 way wall plug stopped working because it also burned. On top of that for the longest time we've had a few outlets that just stopped working. Not to add the fact theres space heaters plugged in all over and tripping circuit breakers. My dog also keeps trying to lay on one and burnt some of his hair atleast it was just his hair. So I keep sitting here thinking that the house is going to burn next so fun...
Kind of funny in some ways how much can go wrong and how hard stuff is to fix. Pets really help tho I'd take a leaky roof and everything over losing them any day as long as I don't hurt them more by keeping them. And I believe I'm hurting Rasta more then helping her keeping Rasta locked up and not being able to help her feel better. But at least I fond someone to get her to the vets when she really needed it and wont give up on her. I know more then a few people just say to put her down.
Also sorry if I shouldn't talk about any of it on here but it does help to talk about stuff with someone.

This is so true. And no-one realises how hostile and frightening a place the world can become - and how quickly. I had an accident a number of years ago and my whole life fell apart in the space of less than 6 months.

I am so, so sorry that all of this is happening to you. I'm glad that you chose to share some of your story with us and that you feel a little better after doing so. I know only too well from personal experience how very much harder it is when times are really tough and there is no-one to talk to. :(

Sending a prayer that the universe will move to help you and your little furry ones.

Thank you I hope everything goes well for you also. It's always nice to have a ear to listen/eyes to read. I normally find myself being the one to listen to others. I never know what to say back and some times I get more sad about there problems then they are but I'm always happy to listen. lol

Have you applied for heat assistance if you call them they will help with your furnace new one or fix it all for free. There are programs to help make your house safer for you. Please call and see what they can do for you.

I'm not really sure what your talking about. Where would I go to do that? All we know about is DHS paying your bill if you get a shut off notice which we haven't got yet..

OK thank you. I'm on SSI for problems I was born with. My BF is my paye and is trying to get on SSDI as he can no longer walk or drive. I get about $750 a month on ssi and my ebt got knocked down to $85. so 2.7 or so a day for food it's just so fun isn't it. the rent for this falling apart trailer is around 500 then dte and gas bills take up all the rest of it. we owe over 300 on gas just waiting for then to send a shut of because of it.

Thank you for any info you can give.

We should move this talk you can pm me. we should not be using this forum for this. We are not talking cat health.

I'm very glad to hear that you've had some help with food for Rasta. Please keep us updated with how Rasta's getting on, and stop by for some :bighug::bighug::bighug:.

Will do.
If you have any idea of anyone around me thats looking for a kitty like Rasta send them my way. She'll be happier when shes not being locked to one room or getting in fights. That seems the hardest part.

Hope everything in going well for you also and have a nice night. :)
