Hi my 14 pound male black cat was diagnosed last March and put on prozinc he went into remission in dec 2012 steady at 150 for a couple of weeks so I quit testing and continued the fancy feast classics. He has the 5 p's and will jump across the room if you let him. Recently i've been keeping my ex-wifes schnauzer as I have two of them as well... All of my animal are on a wet diet hers is on a partial meaning she gets half hard, half soft....

So on to my concerns yoyo has been doing great the last few months up until recently, and for the most part still is. I did notice a behavioral change in him about a week ago and became concerned... Hard to describe it but I felt like he was losing backend strength again... He eats at 7am and generally 5 to 6 pm I just tested him at 3pm for the first time in 2 months and his BG was at 214. So my question is with him being 8 years old and weighing 14 pounds does this mean that he is coming out of remission? I have an appointment with the vet Monday for a complete workup.

Another thing is that he is insufferable about the fancy feast almost demanding if I slip on his times. He will also knock out 2 cans if I don't watch him. Hypothalamus issues maybe?

He looks and acts great purrs, preens, plays. When I hold him to two cans of FFa day he seems to do better but my older cat doesn't always get the chance to eat hers unless I quarantine him as he will take hers.

His water consumption is nil, his pee output seems normal and his stools are normal. He was on prozinc for 7 months and never regained full use of his back legs until he went into remission which I thought was weird.

This is my first post here but learned enough about diabetes lurking on these forums to switch him from hills diabetic hard food to FF and he went into remission within about 4 weeks.

I'm glad I checked his BG today the 214 concerns me. Is this a normal reading 7 hours after feeding for a diabetic cat? Ithink my sneaky boy may have gotten into some hard food last week that is my main concern. Can getting into hard food a couple of times be the issue and what should I be concerned about with his huge appetite?

I do home test but hate it, I'm high strung and a bundle of nerves even after all the times I have done it in the past

Any help would be appreciated

A BG of 214 without stress is a diabetic BG. There also may be other things that need treatment too. The vet visit is a good thing to do.

Hello there

214 is too high - a normal cat should be 50-130. Its nor horrible, but bad enough to be concerned.

Dry food is really bad for cats blood sugar - even a little can spike it for over 24 hours so it looks like it pushed him out of remission. Time to take him off it permanently - no dry treats or nothing. My Tiggy accidently got 14% canned food for two weeks and fell out of remission so it does happen.

We have a formula for how much to feed and at his weight you can probably give him 3 cans of fancy feast classics a day. Weigh him weekly though and if he starts to put on weight you can reduce it.

You could try methylcobalamin B12 for his back legs. Many people here use zobaline which is designed for cats but any methylcobalamin pill will work as long as it doesnt have sugars or xylitol in it. Takes 4-6 weeks before you see a difference. And better blood sugar control will help with that too.

When you go to the vet also have him checked for any signs of infection - dental issues, urinary tract or ear infections as they can have an impact too. And sorry, keep testing his blood once or twice a day till then - it might well go back down with the food control.

keep us updated!

Wendy

Thanks for the responses! I will update with what the vet says.

Ok so an update sorry for the delay in posts work has been crazy. I went to the vet and had to fight to get YoYo on Lantus. She wanted to put him on Prozinc. She did a complete blood workup on him and said he was fabulous with no Thyroid issues like I thought he may have had due to his appetite. He is doing wonderfully but his appetite is still annoying from my perspective.

I did find out that he is Burmese, and big by nature and that explains his very non domestic tendencies, hard to explain but he is a weird dominating animal which I love...

Only thing at this point is he is losing a little hair at his injection sites is this normal? He doesn't seem to be bothered by it and there is no visible skin issue...

Has anyone else experienced this?

He might be getting into the schnauzer's kibble, which might explain the increase in BGs. If not, how are his teeth? No dental issues or infections or steroid use for anything else?

Where specifically are you injecting? In the scruff, flanks, and/or sides? Are you reusing syringes or rubbing the injection site after a shot? Please let us know how it's going. :-D

Rubbing the injection site can break down the molecules of Lantus. Forgot where I read that, another 'senior moment' today.

The hair loss may be a side effect of the high blood sugars. My foster cat Wink had clumps of fur falling out at the shelter and the worst dandruff you can imagine with huge flakes. One advantage of all his bald spots, was that it was very easy to see down to the skin on his flanks, so that is where I injected the insulin.

Better food, low carb wet as opposed to high carb dry and the fur started to grow back, the dandruff cleared up, and he went OTJ.
