I have a cat named Chicken. I feed Wellness canned chicken to her usually. Two of my other cats eat raw. If Chicken eats raw food, she projectile vomits it after about an hour (this is a new thing). Before she was eating raw just fine. Lately she has been vomiting in the middle of the night her canned food. I thought maybe chicken was the problem, so I bought Wellness turkey, but it also has chicken in it. I bought some Merrick BG beef and she didn't vomit, but did get diarrhea. I have caught her drinking in the middle of the night the past couple of nights (if I use the humidifier, she doesn't drink in the middle of the night, but I forgot to turn it on). Her BG is 53 and she has never had diabetes.

I was wondering if slippery elm bark might help soothe her stomach. I've heard of people using this. I do leave food out all night (I always mix water in with their food). Where can I buy slippery elm bark and do I buy it in a powder form or liquid? What about dosage?

Chicken has lost about 1.25 pounds since the beginning of December when she was diagnosed with vaccine associated sarcoma. She went through 21 days of radiation therapy from the end of December until the end of January. During that time she lost the weight while fasting. She is on 1mg. of cyproheptadine every couple of days to help stimulate her appetite.

We are trying to start her on CCNU chemo, but her white blood count is a little low and has been so for a month now. I have no idea why and the doctors aren't concerned.

I want to do everything I can for her.

Thanks,
Jenny

Re: Chicken vomiting - any ideas @ what might help??

The title of your post confused me at first..people might think the cat is vomiting chicken when you mean the cat's name is Chicken. You might want to change the title to "Cat vomiting" so others like me will understand better.

I don't know if slippery elm is safe for cats so I can't comment on that. When my cat was vomiting a lot my vet prescribed a quarter tablet of Pepcid (famotidine) about thirty minutes before feeding him.Just be sure it is regular Pepcid in the 10mg tablets. It is available over the counter.I know some other members have also safely used this.

There is also a product you can get that helps restore the benefical bacteria in the cat's digestive system. Maybe another member will remember the name of it. I used it after Nomad was on antibiotics for a long time. It worked and I got it from a local pet store. I threw the box out but I think it had flora in the name.

FortiFlora is what you're thinking of. I used it as well when Jason was on Clavamox for a solid month and had nasty diarrhea from it.

slippery elm is totally safe for cats but I'm not certain whether it would help with tummy issues as its more for intestional issues. If you do a search of this site there is a post somewhere that details how much of the powder to use...mix with boiling water and make a gel, etc.

I'd be looking at pepcid ac (not complete) and adding that to her regimen if the vet agrees.

I would also suggest the pepcid AC regular strength, but if it continues you may want to have her tested for pancreatitis. My friends cat is on pred/leukeran and just had a big bout of pancreatitis.

I added probiotics to our cat food when i changed their diet. I was so tired of cleaning up vomit and flat poo-poos from 4 cats so I called the vet to see what I could do. I think they were having an issue with beef in the new food but I was not sure which one was reacting to which flavor. I had tried to mix the old food and new food for a while but when I went to the new food totally, we had the stomach problems. The vet told me to stop feeding that brand since they had some type of problem with it -maybe an allergy. She told me about probiotics and that it would help settle the tummies while I switched foods again to another food. I found it at the petstore. It worked great and did so within a couple of days.

Thanks so much for all your replies. It seems that since I have switched to turkey, she is doing much better. The last batch of raw that I made was all chicken and that's what she threw up so much. I just got 5# of turkey thighs last night to make a new batch, so I will try that now! Thank you!!!!

What kind of probiotic did you use? Do you remember?

Thanks!
Jenny

I got NaturVet Enzymes and Probiotics from PetSupermarket. Petsmart has "pre"biotics for cats and probiotics for dogs. My niece said that Pre or Pro would be okay. Good luck!
