My cat Rascal has been vomiting the past few days but this time he passed out for a few seconds. He acts just fine right after (besides being a little lethargic) and eats his food. I tested his blood sugar and it was 108 so I’m not sure if it even has anything to do with his diabetes or if it’s something else. We’re going to call the vet tomorrow. ☹️ (he’s not on anything to regulate his blood sugar)

Is your kitty a diabetic?
Have you tested for ketones in the urine? To do that you need a bottle of Ketostix from Walmart or a pharmacy and follow directions on the bottle. There should be no ketones
I would definitely take your kitty to the vet asap

Yes, he is diabetic. We haven’t tested for ketones but hopefully tomorrow he can get an appointment at the vet. It’s currently 12:43 in the morning so we have to wait until at least 8 to call.

Update - We just got back from the vet and he had his blood sugar tested (169) and got blood work done. They said that they couldn’t find any reason to why he was vomiting so they gave him a nausea shot (Cerenia). So far today he’s been fine. If he starts vomiting again they will do an X-ray on his gi tract. The only thing about his blood work is that it showed a slightly high Blood urea nitrogen so they said it could be the onset of a kidney disease but there’s nothing majorly wrong with him.

I’m glad there was nothing serious wrong with Rascal. He might just need to take some antinausea meds for a few days. He can take cerenia or ondansetron orally. I would trial doing that before getting an X-ray of the GI tract.
Would you like to get a spreadsheet set up so you can add any data and we can help you with dosing and managing the diabetes?

I removed the 911 as this thankfully is not a medical emergency. The "?" is a better option for this. 911's cause us all to panic in concern.

Sorry for putting it as 911, it was the middle of the night when I put that and I was just really concerned because I wasn’t sure what was going on and there was no way to call the vet so late at night since they aren’t there then. ☹️

My nephew's cat did this--vomited and then passed out after what looked like a brief seizure.
Many hundreds of dollars of emergency vet later, the diagnosis was that while vomiting the muscle motions triggered the cat's vagus nerve, which spasmed and made her pass out. Basically harmless but scary.

We had to take Rascal back to the vet. He might have to be put down tomorrow. They think he actually might have colon cancer after doing an X-ray. They are putting him on 24 hour fluids and seeing if his X-ray shows up better tomorrow. If not he can try surgery but she said he probably won’t make it through, or we can put him down.

:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
There are different types of cancer that can be in the colon. Did they see a mass? That is likely large cell lymphoma. If just a thickened colon, that could be small cell lymphoma - a very treatable type with a large remission rate. X-rays are not the best way to diagnosis this.

I’m not sure. They will see if he gets sick tonight and give him food in the morning. They’ll take another X-ray tomorrow after having overnight IV’s and see if it’s just something stuck that moved through or if it looks the same on the X-ray. If it doesn’t change they will try to do surgery and see what’s blocked. They aren’t even sure if it’s cancer but that’s what she thinks it is as of right now. We’re hoping it’s just something stuck that needs to pass through or have removed.

The vets just called and said the IV’s are working whatever is in his stomach is moving. He’s going to stay until at least morning then he might come home. They’re just making sure it keeps working and moves out.
Good update- Rascal got to come home a day early, as long as he doesn’t vomit anymore he doesn’t have to go back to the vet at all. The vet is still not 100% sure that there’s not a mass. So if he starts vomiting again he will most likely have surgery. So hopefully he does okay now. He hasn’t vomited at all since he went to the vet yesterday morning.

Thanks for the update. Do you know if the vet checked your cat's electrolytes after vomiting? Vomiting can throw electrolyte levels off.
How are electrolytes checked? If it’s through blood work he had that done. On his papers from the blood work it only shows up that GLU, SDMA, and BUN were all higher than the normal range. I’m not sure about the electrolytes though.

So good to hear the update:)
Rascal is going to get an exploratory done on Thursday because he started vomiting again. They said it could be lymphoma or just something stuck. They’re still not sure what it is, but we will know when he gets it done. He vomited a few times last night so I took his food away at 3 AM and he’s been fine ever since. He only gets sick when he eats, but it only seems to be late at night or early morning. He eats just fine throughout the day without getting sick but starts to at night and we’re not sure why. So he’s not getting sick every time he eats. The vet said she wouldn’t think it’s cancer since he acts fine otherwise but with his age it’s very possible. It was up to us if he stayed at the vet until Thursday or if we wanted to bring him home until then so we chose to leave him there. He’s getting some more IV’s and another Cerenia shot while he’s there. The IV’s really helped him the other day when we he got it done, he went almost three days without getting sick and was acting very happy. We will most likely be able to bring him home either Thursday evening or Friday if all goes well. Other than the vomiting he acts the same as he always has, playing and purring.

Typically the next step for GI issues in an ultrasound, to decide where would be best for surgery. Some issues can be checked out with an endoscopy, which is a little easier on them than the surgery.

Is he eating anything different at night vs the day? Just wondering if it's a food allergy. I had three kitties in a row with small cell lymphoma, one also had IBD which initially showed up as food allergies. All three were vomiters. Small cell lymphoma is a mild disease and quite treatable with many cats going into remission.

Wishing all the best for Rascal.

Thank you! Rascal eats the same foods throughout the day and at night. Although we do think that he can’t eat fish anymore because he would get sick after eating fish foods but he’s only been eating chicken, beef, and turkey for a while now. He had 2 X-rays, the first one on the 11th and the second one on the 12th. The vet showed us that something in his colon was not normal. After having IV’s for a night whatever was in his colon moved, but they still aren’t sure whether he just has something that’s blocked there that won’t come out or if there is a mass too. We think it could be a bunch of hair because he scratched the fur completely off of his neck for about 2 months and we also seen him trying to eat it after. He also eats anything that he can find no matter what it is, mostly plastic. The vet thinks it’s best to do surgery so we can know for sure what it going on. Did your cats with lymphoma act the same as they always did or did they act different? The only time Rascal acts different is right before he throws up then he acts the same as always like nothing ever happened, and yells for some food. His appetite has not decreased at all either.

Pretty much the same. Once treated for SCL, the vomiting gradually stopped. Except IBD girl if I accidentally give her something with a protein she's allergic to, the she vomits it almost right away.

Rascal just died.

so sorry to hear that, sounds like he had a good long life and you did everything you could and gave him lots of love and care. Fly free Rascal, chasing butterflies over the rainbow bridge.

You might want to edit your thread title with the letters GA, for gone ahead. :(

Everytime I read one of these threads I think of my boys Shylo and Hendrick, both 12. How many more years do I have....no idea. So hard to say goodbye.

Thank you all, Rascal was an amazing cat and my best friend. I was only 1 month away from being 3 years old when we first got him, he would have been 15 years old this December and I will be 18 in January. I’m glad I got to spend my childhood growing up with him, I love him very much.

That really is very special that you grew up with Rascal from the time you were a young child. He was a huge part of your life. It definitely is hard to lose a member of your family like Rascal. It leaves a huge void. I know.
