Cat that grazes

We have a cat ( Scat) who all her life has not eaten at any set time but prefers to eat small amounts through out the day. She is 14 years old found in Malaysia as a feral and only weighs 3.4kg so is a very small cat. She was diagnosed with diabetes several months ago and the vet recommended that she be given 4 units of insulin using U100 needles twice a day after food which we have been doing. Sticking to that regime means that she may get her insulin anywhere between 7am and 10 am then again at night after eating. However sometimes she will not eat at all for the day until the night. Has always been a very small eater even though there is food put down twice a day and there are lo GI nibbles always available for her.

My question is, should I give her the insulin at a regular time and let her graze at her leisure or not give her any insulin if she does not eat.

Hello and welcome to the board

So do you live in Malaysia now? It will help us recommend things if we know what country you are in!

Are you home testing her blood?

Thanks
Wendy

No we live at Hanging Rock in Victoria, Australia. Was working in Malaysia at the time and cat got in car under the seat when we stopped for some food from a food stall and she has and never left!!

We dont do the blood tests, it bloodied us and traumatised the cat so the Vet is doing it every 4 weeks and said last week that she appeared to be doing fine with that quantity of insulin but as the weather warms up Skat is less inclined to eat in the morning.

Thats a shame because can insulin is a fast acting harsh insulin on cats and can make them drop really fast. Especially if not eating. Since you won't know if she is low, I definitely wouldn't shoot if she doesn't eat.

have you spoken to the vet about Lantus? Its a much better insulin for cats and can even cause remission.

Thanks wendy for the reply.

I will discuss with the vet next time. Meanwhile will just keep trying lots of different food types.
