i have a new libre and it is registering my cat 'hi'. do cats get dopey when sugar is high? i thought that only happened when sugar is low, or is she just have a lazy day. it is humid in rhode island today, so maybe that?

Cats can feel unwell at times if the BG is high.
However if you are not testing the urine for ketones I would do that. A diabetic cat who is unregulated is more prone to ketones than others.

Is your cat eating well? Is your cat dehydrated? To test you can lift up the scruff and see if it drops back quickly or slowly. And you can run your finger over the guns. Are they tacky or nice and wet?

Does your kitty have an infection such as a UTI.

Are you hometesting the BGs? It sounds as if you might be. Can you share a spreadsheet with us?
What insulin and dose is your kitty on?
When was your kitty diagnosed?

The first thing I would do is check for ketones in the urine by buying a bottle of Ketostix from Walmart or a pharmacy and follow the instructions on the bottle. There should be no ketones.
Let us know how you get on.

normal today. numbers were high all day yesterday. no idea why. back to 230-something this morning, low for her as a morning reading. her readings are a mystery to me! i am using a libre for the moment. she has been fighting the ear sticks so i am giving her a break. she gets 1-1/2 units of insulin morning and night pretty consistently and still her readings are inconsistent!

i will try the ketone testing. she has had UTI's in the past.

it's been very humid here in rhode island for a couple of days which could also cause her to move less.

she is 12 years old and was diagnosed about a year ago.

Sara, if you set up a spreadsheet and a signature for us to see, it would enable us to help you. At the moment we can really only guess what is happening. It is possible your kitty is bouncing.
  • Bouncing - Bouncing is simply a natural reaction to what the cat's system perceives as a BG value that is "too low". "Too low" is relative. If a cat is used to BGs in the 200's, 300's, or higher for a long time, then even a BG that drops to 150 can trigger a "bounce". Bouncing can also be triggered if the blood glucose drops too low and/or too fast. The pancreas, then the liver, release glucogon, glycogen and counter-regulatory hormones. The end result is a dumping of "sugar" into the bloodstream to save the cat from going hypoglycemic from a perceived low. The action is often referred to as "liver panic" or "panicky liver". *Usually*, a bounce will clear kitty's system within 3 days (6 cycles).
