Scary story... My non-diabetic cat Beni Imo (sweet potato in Japanese) OD'd on cat grass. I brought Beni to Hawaii from Okinawa when I was stationed there and then moved here. He's a 10 year old black American short hair with some Siamese in him. Anyway he loves to nibble on cat grass to the point that I have to take it away from him or he'll get sick. Well this past Monday I lost sight of him and he nibbled and nibbled and nibbled until he had eaten a lot of grass. Next thing I know he's throwing up grass and food all over the place and then just throwing up liquid. He spent all day throwing up, drinking water like crazy, looking for more cat grass and throwing up again! Of course I hid the cat grass from him but he kept drinking water and didn't want to eat anything. It went on all night, him drinking water and throwing up. I even did a GC test on him because the excessive thirst had me concerned; he tested good at 65. The next morning I got him to eat a little FF but threw up again was pretty weak and just went to hide and slept most of the day. I tried feeding him again because he was going on 24 hours without food but he just didn't want anything and was still throwing up. I boiled some chicken, offered some tuna, and his favorite sardines, nothing, at least he was drinking water. I was so scared for him, I didn't know if the cat grass was contaminated with pesticides or what was going on. I made a vet appointment for the next morning and hoped for the best that night. Sometime around 1 am he wakes me up and is apparently starving and wants to eat right there and now! I get up and feed him and Dusty some FF and they both pig out with Beni finally keeping his food down. After all that he recovered like nothing had happened. All I can figure out is that he OD'd on cat grass . I'm a firm believer in cat grass but I learned a very important lesson, kitties can apparently OD on it :o .

Wow that is scary. I wonder if something else was going on. Mine love the grass and will mow it if I allow. Rarely do mine throw up after eating it.

Some cats do crave it, just to help them throw up. That is why it makes me wonder if he got into something else or just had a stomach virus and the grass helped him to expel it all.

Glad he is feeling better.

Sometime cats will eat grass when they are not feeling good. It seems to help them vomit. It could be that he was sick already and was eating the grass because he was not feeling good.

He's doing fine, like nothing happened. He was acting normal before his grass binge but then again he may have felt unwell and he felt he needed some grass, a lot of grass  . What was weird was he was stuck in a loop; eating grass, throwing up, eating more grass, throwing up, eating more grass... until I took it away from him and everything settled down. All I can say is no more grass for a while :o .

I have always shaken my head at the whole cat grass thing. I have lived with cats my whole life, and the only thing cat grass ever does for them is make them vomit. I still occasionally give it to them, because they do seem to want it, but the way it is always advertised makes me snort.
