Cat not liking FF cat food but ate Target’s Kindful and liked it? Is it diabetic friendly

Ok… my Mikey liked Fancy Feast when first diagnosed but now he is either refusing to eat it or only eating a half a can .
He does like Wysongs Epigen 90 dry food which is Dr Lisa approved, but I want get him on another wet product.
What has worked for you? I have wasted so many FF Pate, chunked or flaked cans.

I took him to the vet and she thinks he is probably feeling better and returning to his old pre diabetic picky eater self. He even hates people tuna.

He had one can of Target’s Kindful and loved it. Is it ok? Not on Dr Lisa’s chart

There's lots of choices. Choose foods under 10 percent carb. A lot feed Friskies pate. https://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf
 
Here's what worked for me. I put the ff out for 30 minutes and then take it away twice a day, no other food. After a few days they'll happily eat it all. If you change foods you'll have to start the whole process over again.

Just pick one flavor and stick with it, if you give them options of course they're gonna work you to get option b. :)

This is not really a good idea as cats must eat….especially diabetic cats. I know cats can be fussy and like to train their owners but leaving a diabetic cat without food for even a couple of days can lead to problems such as ketones or hepatic lipidosis.
Tom…could Mickey be nauseated? Or do you think he’s just fussy ?
There are lots of other suitable low carb foods out there apart one FF you could try. If he won’t eat one of them, I would transfer the rest of the can to a plastic bag and mark it with no of carbs and try again at a later date. Then there is no wastage…I used to do that with Shebas food, especially the high carb food when I didn’t use the whole can.

No, he is not nauseated because he eats his dry food and sometimes his FF, but it is a challenge. I took him to the vet yesterday and he has gained weight and appears healthy. Blood work was done but she thinks he is just being a picky cat. The results should come in today
 
We had that problem when Duke was first diagnosed, he would eat anything obviously due to his ravenous condition but as he became more controlled he became more and more fussy with his food. We tried lots and lots of different foods to try and get him to eat, sometimes 7 yes 7 different types of food at each meal, It could take an hour sometimes to get food into him.
At the time we were giving him food with vegetable protein extract with gave him real bad internal problems (obviously at the time we didn't know what was causing the problems)
This is what i posted a while ago on another thread. I have noticed since that post most if not all Purina food sold in the UK contains vegetable protein extract, i presume in the USA it's the same.
Regarding Astra's food, we had loads of problems with our cat not eating and having severe bouts of pancreatitis (confirmed on 24th June)
One night (30th August) he had a low number and we gave him high carb Gourmet Gold to bring his numbers up a bit, for days after that his bloods were all over and he was in pain, off to the vets and pancreatitis was confirmed again with blood tests.
Obviously at the time we didn't know what caused it but something caused his bloods to be all over and the only thing different he had that night was the Gourmet Gold that contains the vegetable protein extract.
We stopped giving him Gourmet Gold because it contains vegetable protein extract because for some reason reacts badly to it, also he started reacting badly to whiskas and we couldn't understand why until i read the ingredients and low and behold they had started adding vegetable protein extract to it.
Now all we give him is Sheba fine flakes in jelly which does not contain the veg protein extract and he's not had one bad episode since and ate every meal since. No pain killers, no antacid and no appetite stimulants at all since swapping foods, (fingers crossed he stays that way) coincidence or not i don't know but i believe it's not, maybe that's Astra's problem and worth a try.

I didn't say not to give them food, you need to train them to eat the food provided and the amount. I think getting the cat on low carb and proper weight should be the highest priority. I'm only going from my experience, no carbs, proper weight and we've been diet controlled. It took about 2 weeks to get fully sorted, now I put the same food out every day and they eat almost all of it, plus I can tightly control their weight.

Been there…many times ;) Lando has judgey eyes haha. Oh btw make sure you reference Dr Lisas food chart. I believe its PATE only from sheba… but check the guide. I am famous for measuring once cutting 5xs ;)
 
Personally, I think something is going on with some of the FF flavors. Stuff Magic would devour in minutes now gets snubbed. Gave him exactly the same flavor from a different case and he'll eat it as normal. It's like certain cans/lots he has a 'problem' with. I sent an email to Purina but I'm seriously doubting they'll tell me anything conclusive.

Well the textures have definitely changed on the gravy lovers variety over the last few months. Dont worry its for my non diabetic cat ;)
 
I am having the same problem with Checkers and have wondered if Fancy Feast are having some quality control problems. I have checked the lot number on the cans to see if there is a pattern to what he will and won't eat, haven't found a pattern yet:confused:. Though, he has a much better appetite when his BG is higher like when he is bouncing and it is a challenge to get him to eat when he is in the blues and greens:arghh:(I guess when henis hungry he will eat anything:p).

In Canada you can get a similar brand called Lovibles which has suspiciously similar flavours, same size cans and roughly the same price. And conveniently quite a few are low carb. Checkers really likes these so far and has eaten them when I couldn't get him to eat the Fancy Feast. But as far as I now are only available in Canada at Pet Valu stores.

Not sure if it's diabetic friendly because of the brown rice flower and pea protein

I would love that. He ate a can and 6 hours later his glucose level had no horrendous spikes. But I don’t want to purchase more of it is bad stuff

This is a link to a cat food carb calculator. You plug in the information from the can or website. Keep in mind that these are approximate values since the information on the can is likely the guaranteed analysis. They give numbers in minimums or maximums. It will give you at least some idea if the food is diabetes friendly.

I haven't the faintest. It's not available in Canada so have never see it before. Pea flour, barley and brown rice protein don't look diabetic friendly. Buy depends on the quantities. You may have to try to do the calculations yourself.
 
If it's pate is probably ok, but you could write to the manufacturer and ask what the ME Profile carb count is.
