Cat not eating enough

I have not been able to give insulin 2x. Vet prescribed cyproheptadine. Cat was already on a low dose of phenobarbitol for seizures. Now she is extremely sedated. She ate 2 bites of canned chicken.

Vet has no openings. Emergency vet is far away and my husband is getting set up for chemo and surgery. I'm not sure she's that sick, she is heavily sedated.

What can I do here, at home? Should I give a little insulin even though she won't eat? She is due for a dose now. Tx

I took a chance and gave her a lower dose of insulin. She ate maybe 10 pieces of dry cat food, 3 tiny cat treats, a tiny amount of cheese...idk, maybe 25 calories of food? I will keep trying. I have some of that hartz bisque.

I need practical advice. I'm super overwhelmed.

I will call the vet again tomorrow. I had asked for an appointment and was told they were full.

Your kitty maybe nauseous & that might be why kitty doesn't want to eat. When you call your vet ask for Ondansetron it is for nausea. You will need a prescription that your vet will have to give you to take to a human pharmacy. Also Mirataz is an appetite stimulant that you can get at the vets office. You want to give the Ondansetron about an hour before you put the Mirataz on your kitty's ear. Also you can try fortiflora that the vet should also have. You just sprinkle a little bit on kitty's food. Try the Ondansetron & Mirataz first though. I hope this helps. Good luck & keep us updated.

If you are having trouble getting her to eat, let her eat whatever she will eat as eating something is the most important thing. Christina gave you good advice on what to get from the vet. I’m glad you gave her some insulin.

She looks better this morning. Still not normal, but halfway there? I think I probably messed her up with an abrupt food change, which i know better than to do that. I've been gone or busy too, and this cat is usually on my lap a lot.

I will talk to the vet today, but that may be later, and might be through a vet tech as an intermediary. Do you guys think pepcid ac/famotadine helps with nausea? I'm pretty sure the vet had me use that years ago with another cat. Is ondansetron a lot better? I know the vet has an ear med, the vet tech told me that.

Tx a bunch.

Ask for the ondansetron prescription and Cerenia too. I’d also ask for the apetite stimulant mentioned. You should have all those at hand in case she stops eating again. The pepcid doesn’t do much

The ear med is the apetite stimulant but even with that, if the cat is nauseated it won’t eat so you need both the anti nausea first. Ondansetron and Cerenia can both be given together since they work differently. Vets are more familiar with Cerenia so that’s what they tend to prescribe. I had to really make a case with my vet to get her to give me the ondansetron and it’s what worked for Minnie always

I made an appointment for Tuesday and will get another Freestyle Libre put on. I have a prescription for mirtazapine to pick up and will work with the vet on various treatment plans for the cat since I may have just have to do my best at home.

I'm not sure why vet plan differs from the ordansetran and cerenia... there may be drug interactions with the phenobarbitol or because she has seizures, idk.

It will be good to have an array of solutions at home.

She's still not super hungry, but she had enough. I lowered her dose just a bit. But the vet said her lack of eating can be too high sugar, too low, or something else. So she can run the frutosamine test and with the freestyle libre too she can figure it out. They're too busy at that office. I end up communicating through a vet tech. The staff are great and the vet is super sharp and practical. But I end up winging it more than I like to.
