Cat moving head in circles.....

Babee was lying on floor cleaning herself, then suddenly put her head up in the air and moved it in circles severl times. She wasn't chewing and doing anything with her mouth. She did it a again a few minutes later. I am worried...........has anyone seen this before? Could this be a stroke. She had her insulin 40 mins before this happened.

Should I take her to the vet? Any help is greatly appreciated.
 
I would definitely call the vet ASAP. Whether or not this has anything to do with diabetes, the head-circling is something I would definitely want to check out. It may be something trivial, but if it does have something to do with diabetes, that is not something to be taken lightly. Better safe than sorry.
 
She is diabetic and on Prozinc. I am less than 1/4 of the bottle left. I am wondering is the insulin has pooped out. She was just hanging over the water dish for a few minutes... but otherwise acting fine.

Her ears have a bit of wax in them and I bought wipes to clean them out. I am in the process of changing vets, since her current vets is old school and didn't get back to me about the Wellness recall issues.

Should I take her to the ER or call vet in morning? I have been watching her since the 2 episodes and she seems fine.

Thanks all for you help. I am just a little freaked out with the Wellness recall and her being diabetic. She was only eating the recalled canned Wellness.
 
If your PZI is pooping out, you should see that reflected in her bg levels. They would probably continue to rise with the same dose that was working previously.

this usually occurs when sugar levels are high. Cats try to drink to flush the sugar.

Can you test your cats sugar- do you have a glucometer?

Prozinc is supposed to last a long time, although a lot of us have switched to another insulin after getting frustrated trying to regulate our cats. How long has it been open, and have you kept it from freezing, and sunlight, and refrigerated?

How do his pupils look? do they react to light?
 
That doesn't sound like a bad number.

If she is acting okay now, I would suspect maybe ears. Maybe ask the vet in the am?

Do you test regularly so you know how the insulin is working?
 
I have been using the Prozinc bottle since 10/14/10 and it has been kept in the frig. I have another unopened bottle. Should I change bottles? She seems to have been doing well on Prozinc.

I haven't tested regularly since the vet said she was ok at the 1 unit dose. She is some what difficult to test.

I wouldn't open a new vial until I saw numbers that would indicate it isn't working. 204 after eating doesn't sound bad at all. Especially since prozinc onset is about 2 hours. It sounds like you shot at 8? so it shouldn't have kicked in yet.

did she only do it a few times? did it seem like she was uncomfortable right before, during, or right afterwards? perhaps there was a gnat in the air or something possibly?

if she's still doing it or acting oddly, can you get a good look at her eyes? see if they are twitching side to side at all? they possibly will go faster to one side and slower to the other, almost like they're spring loaded and when pulled slowly to one side, they snap back to the other side. it's something called nystagmus is what i'm wondering about.

and what about balance? does she seem off balance at all?
 
She had her insulin at 7:30pm.

She seemed a bit uncomfortable while she was moving head. She did it twice. It was like 2 different episodes and in between she was licking and biting at her front claws. It was really weird. At first I thought she was sniffing the air, but then she kept moving her head around.

Her eyes and balance seem fine.

Cindy, I don't mean to hijack here, but why do you ask about nystagmus? Java has had it since he was a kitten.
 
Mousie had a reeeeeeal bad episode a couple years ago. scared the bejeezus out of me one morning. she couldn't walk or if she tried she fell over or spun in circles. and her eyes were freaky. that's when i learned a bit about nystagmus and vestibular disease. as a matter of fact, an er vet got $400 and couldn't tell me anything. a video i posted here for members of fdmb to see had a diagnosis within minutes, vestibular episode. Mousie's was caused by a glob of goo sitting on her eardrum because of an ear infection. vet removed the glob and in a few short days she was good again.

i brought it up because when it's there, it's pretty obvious as you know. and Mousie would jerk her head oddly about when she was going thru this so that's why i asked about looking closely at Babee's eyes.
