I'm new so a quick intro to my cat. Sebastian is a 13 year old male and aside from being diabetic he is a very healthy and happy cat. He's been getting Lantus insulin injections twice a day since his diagnosis 2 years ago. He currently gets 2 units twice a day, the vet recently reduced it from 3 units twice a day and he's doing well at this dosage. Sebastian is my baby, he always wants to snuggle and follows me around the house, the sweetest little boy. But he is not fond of company or strangers. He's not mean but he doesn't want to be bothered or touched by other people. He's close to my fiancé too but he pretty much just tolerates my fiancé's touches, kisses, insulin injections.
I was diagnosed with a chronic illness 18 months ago, a long recovery which prevented me from leaving home. I'm able to travel now so about 6 weeks ago we hired a highly recommended cat sitter who gives injections, fluids, etc., works with special needs cats. I knew Sebastian would be a challenge because of his issues with being touched by other people so I had the sitter come to the house several times a week to interact with Sebastian so he could get comfortable with her. It took weeks but ultimately she's been able to give him his injections morning & night for multiple days. I felt very comfortable leaving for a 1 week vacation and leaving Sebastian in the care of the sitter. She is a very sweet woman and the only person (besides me and my fiancé) that he'll allow to touch him & give injections.
My fiancé and I arrived to our destination at 6:00am this morning after a long 12 hour all night drive. This morning the sitter called to let us know she was unable to give the injection last night and again this morning. Sebastian is growling and swinging at her and I think it's because he's realized that we are gone and he's upset. So fiancé and I have our bags packed to make the 12 hour drive back home. The sitter is trying again tonight, hoping that he's settling into us not being there, but our bags are packed to leave first thing in the morning.
Does anyone have techniques or suggestions I can offer to the sitter? I'm worried that his health is being compromised right now and I'm just sick over this. Trying to talk my fiancé into leaving tonight but we're both still very tired from driving all night long to get here & realistically we need sleep. (Boarding him is not an option, that's a different story and nightmare mistake I'll never make again.) Advice or suggestions?
Thank you for your help,
Celeste
