I'm new so a quick intro to my cat. Sebastian is a 13 year old male and aside from being diabetic he is a very healthy and happy cat. He's been getting Lantus insulin injections twice a day since his diagnosis 2 years ago. He currently gets 2 units twice a day, the vet recently reduced it from 3 units twice a day and he's doing well at this dosage. Sebastian is my baby, he always wants to snuggle and follows me around the house, the sweetest little boy. But he is not fond of company or strangers. He's not mean but he doesn't want to be bothered or touched by other people. He's close to my fiancé too but he pretty much just tolerates my fiancé's touches, kisses, insulin injections.

I was diagnosed with a chronic illness 18 months ago, a long recovery which prevented me from leaving home. I'm able to travel now so about 6 weeks ago we hired a highly recommended cat sitter who gives injections, fluids, etc., works with special needs cats. I knew Sebastian would be a challenge because of his issues with being touched by other people so I had the sitter come to the house several times a week to interact with Sebastian so he could get comfortable with her. It took weeks but ultimately she's been able to give him his injections morning & night for multiple days. I felt very comfortable leaving for a 1 week vacation and leaving Sebastian in the care of the sitter. She is a very sweet woman and the only person (besides me and my fiancé) that he'll allow to touch him & give injections.

My fiancé and I arrived to our destination at 6:00am this morning after a long 12 hour all night drive. This morning the sitter called to let us know she was unable to give the injection last night and again this morning. Sebastian is growling and swinging at her and I think it's because he's realized that we are gone and he's upset. So fiancé and I have our bags packed to make the 12 hour drive back home. The sitter is trying again tonight, hoping that he's settling into us not being there, but our bags are packed to leave first thing in the morning.

Does anyone have techniques or suggestions I can offer to the sitter? I'm worried that his health is being compromised right now and I'm just sick over this. Trying to talk my fiancé into leaving tonight but we're both still very tired from driving all night long to get here & realistically we need sleep. (Boarding him is not an option, that's a different story and nightmare mistake I'll never make again.) Advice or suggestions?

Thank you for your help,
Celeste

First, BREATHE....and again....it's not the end of the world! Now SLEEP before you do anything else ....pwetty please?

I have no suggestions, hopefully others will but there's nothing you can do from that far away. Can she take her to a vet and have them give the injection? If not, you'll just have to get her back on track when you get back. You don't have to worry about a hypo.

HUGS...and BREATHE again!

Normally I give Skooter his injection while he is eating and he could care less.....

He has stayed at my sister's house and they also inject while he is eating and again, when he has his food, he could care less what you do to him (for the most part)

If she can, corral him in a bathroom, then use a large towel to burrito wrap him temporarily and inject him while restrained.

That is how I did it. The vet told me to do it that way. I don't think the cat even noticed (except for the first 2 times).

That may make it more difficult for your sitter.

Other than when she is trying to give him his shots, is he responding well to her? If so, maybe she can bribe him with some low carb treats to at least let her handle him. Then if she can try to shoot him when he is eating, that may help.

For future trips, is it possible you can take him with you? I know there are several people on this list that travel with their cats.

Hello, and welcome to FDMB.

Has Sebastian had any history of ketones?
If that's the case then it could be especially helpful if your sitter could monitor Sebastian's pee for ketones. At least that way she'd have a method of ascertaining whether he may be in any danger while not getting his insulin.
She should be able to get some Ketostix (that measure ketones) or Ketodiastix (which measure ketones and glucose) from most pharmacies. Essentially, they are easy to use. (But the harder part is getting a nice fresh pee sample!) Anything above a trace level of ketones is a reason for a vet visit ASAP.
She could also just be aware of any changes in the way Sebastian's breath smells; and specifically take note if there is any sort of peardrops/acetone smell (which is indicative of ketones).
Here's a link to page of pics and info about urine testing:

I do so hope you are able to relax a bit and enjoy your time out....

Does Sebastian let the sitter groom him? If yes, then perhaps she could shneak the insulin dose into the grooming session while he is a bit more relaxed.

Thank you for such great suggestions! The sitter was able to give an injection this morning and again tonight!! She took the advice to give him the shot while he was eating. She did try it several times before but it was when he was eating treats (freeze dried chicken) rather than a meal. This morning she got him while he was nice and hungry and eating his breakfast! He grumbled but let her do it.

Thanks again everyone! It was very kind of you all to take the time to offer your help.
So grateful,
Celeste

Amazing how they focus a cat's attention! ;-)

Great news about the sitter's success, Celeste. I hope that you and your fiancé have a grand time on your vacation.
