Cat in remission developed kidney disease, help with food suggestions

Hi everyone,

Back in here cause this place helped put our cat in remission after a clourse of corticosteroids gave him diabetes. He's been in remission for 1 year.

The problem is it affected the kidneys. I noticed he pees a lot. Doctor said he has super early CKD. She recommended Early renal food but I can't feed him that without risking both a remission and an IBD/pancreatitis flare.

I tried a lot of expenssive foods 1 year ago and nothing worked. We stuck to Royal Canin GI moderate calories and he has been stable. But now I don't know what to do.

Can you offer some advice? What food worked for you if cat had both diabetes, IBD/pancreatitis and now CKD?

Are you familiar with Tanya's CRF web site? Tanya's Comprehensive Guide to Feline Chronic Kidney Disease – Everything You Need to Know to Help Your Cat There's lots of info there on diet, supplements, treatments, etc. There's a popular forum there too but the way it is set up is not easy to use. It's like an email inbox than a message board like FDMB is. FDMB has a sister site for kidney issues which is still new and slowly growing Feline Kidney Message Board - FKMB

A low carb low phosphorus food would be ideal for the diabetes and kidney issue. For IBD, a novel protein food is ideal. Just note that rabbit is a common novel protein that is high in phosphorus which isn't great for the kidneys. A phosphorus binder could be used.

If your cat is in early stages, something like Porus One might be helpful. Porus One - for the support of feline kidney health

Do you have recent blood work to share? The kidney values would tell more about your cat's kidney function. More peeing could mean anything.

Adding on to that, if you get labs, please be sure and also have the urine tested so we can look at the urine specific gravity and protein.

My kitty, who did not have FD but had CKD and IBD, really liked Evangers low phosphorus beef and it did not upset his IBD. But I’m not sure how many calories from carbs are innit so you would have to call Evangers and get the “as feds” or “dry matter basis”.

I agree the best source of info is Tanya’s very detailed food charts.

Not a ton to add, but seconding the recommendation of Porus One. I think you'll need your vet to prescribe it to get it. My cat Angus (GA) had a 16 on his IDEXX SDMA, and mixing the packets into wet food brought him down to 11 after three months. I cannot speak to how long it works for, as he began to have unrelated health issues and we stopped using Porus One.

He was not diabetic nor IBD, but had loose stool time to time due to herpes flareups. We did not have any issues with the Porus One supplement, but I can't say for certain how it might be received in an IBD cat.
 
No prescription is needed for Porus One :) At least not in the US. Chewy sells it as a regular health supplement.

Leroy has diabetes, IBD, the occasional pancreatitis flare up, and kidney issues:blackeye: He's been on Porus One for a few weeks now. I haven't noticed any difference with the kidney issues. Porus One doesn't affect the bgs or IBD. He does eat mainly rabbit because of the IBD. I haven't gotten him onto a phosphorus binder yet.

Not sure what the source of IBD is as he tolerates chicken proteins in his royal canin wet food. We had to stick with it because it's low fat and he eats it. He refused all other foods we tried after the first 1 - 2 days. We tried to change to a renal food and we only got to 50-50 when he started hiding under the bed, his fur got messy, apetite declined so I switched back to his low fat normal diet. Now I'm trying to add a phosphorus binder so far no luck. I'll try Porus One too and look at the forum you suggested. But getting specialty food in my country is really hard, hope I find something. Thanks for all the help!
 
What country are you located in? We may have members who can point you to suitable foods and supplements for the kidney issues.
