Cat has been eating litter and licking concrete?

Hi ther . My cat for some reason I guess is in remission from diabetes. He got all his blood work back and they said it was good (he came home last week from a week in the er with diabetic ketoacidosis, sepsis and pancreatitis). And he acts very very strange for a couple minutes once in a while trying to lick the garage concrete and licking the litter. I know that's a sign of anemia but they said all of his blood work was really good. I'm trying to get a bg on him but he violently shakes his head it's nearly impossible
 
Can you get a copy of the lab reports? That's not normal. If you can get the poke and then quickly scoop the drop onto the back of your nail you can test from there.
 
It would be good if as Janet mentioned you could get a copy of the labs because that behavior is not normal and as you mentioned it does point towards anemia
 
I'm trying. he just absolutely loses his mind. I cant even touch his ear without him freaking out. Somehow while i was asleep my husband got his bg and its 158 this morning. His lymphnodes like right below his ear are HUGE and something about the size of a grape came back in his throat on the side again. I'm so worried. He got it aspirated a couple of months ago and it came back fine and now it's all swollen again.

I don't really know about this but it seems it bothers him, you could try and test him in his paw so that you don't have to handle his ears or near his face while you figure out what's wrong
 
So his red blood cell count was 4.8 checked this week when the range is 5.92 to 9.93. I dont know how they failed to mention that to me
 
Sorry its so small but best I can do..they didnt even tell me he was anemic I had to email a friend at work where they originally drew blood. his emergency clinic called saying everything looked good. He is on daily proviable

His rbc, hgb, and hct are the red marked ones for low. Hematocrit is low. Mentioning info about hemoplasma
 
I'm just so mad they skipped over that..sometimes I feel like I know more than them. Working as an assistant at a cat only clinic I've learned so much. His gums are pale and he was licking litter and concrete. Just PO right now ..

That was really neglectful of them.
 
He already has ITP and when he was hospitalized for a week he wasnt on his meds for it.. first time in his whole life not being on meds. He has been off meds for 3 weeks and his ITP is controlled somehow and it makes me worry he has something new. I know it takes a long time to fully heal from dka let alone pancreatitis and sepsis. He is acting wonderful aside from some weird anemic behavior.
 
So the doctor was horrible. She acted like she just got out of med school reciting things we didnt need to know or already know saying "his prognosis for a young cat is very poor. Bringing him in here so much is very bad and his quality of life is very bad because of it." All she knew was he has ITP and just because of that she believed he was extremely doomed and unhealthy. She was treating me like I was the doctor she knew literally nothing about him or his blood panels and asking me everything. When they're the ones who called me saying they got his records and it all looked great
 
Does the lab report list reticulocytes either as a line item or in notes? Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells RBCs). When the body recognizes that HCT is low it starts to produce more RBCs. If the anemia came on fast then extra reticulocytes will not have time to be produced but if a long term anemia then either more RBCs are being produced but are being lost . Possible cause are an intern bleed or something is kill the RBCs. However, for some diseases like CKD the mechanism signal the production of RBCs is deficient since the mechanism is in the kidneys.
 
Not sure. There are NRBC that are high.

Just the fact the doctor ignored the anemia and is more focused on his "poor quality of life and prognosis" is ridiculous

I'm not sure... my boss told me this :
1. He is licking litter = iron & B-12
2. He doesn't have lymphoma - btdt - lymphoma rarely ever causes peripheral lymphadenopathy in cats anyways - although Chrystine's cat actually did have that. He has had 2 aspirates.

3. His quality of life is fine. Actually I would kill to have his life most of the time.
4. Already placed order for PCR test - no brainers


He is the vet that knows Morton very well and diagnosed him and here since he was 2 months. We only took him back to his emergency vet because the receptionist said if his nodes are swollen internal medicine said bring him in.
 
I think you should talk about Morton with him and address his anemia, as they mention giving him B vitamin complex specially B12 should help while you figure out what's causing the anemia ( you need to check his kidneys) sometimes darboapentin can be given to help with the anemia but you need a vet check to if is adequate for him
 
I hope things get sorted out with Morton and he starts to feel better. I would be P OFF also as to why that vet didn't tell you this. Wishing Morton all the best. He looks like such a sweetie.
