I have just ordered some pre-grown cat grass from a place called Urban Companions. It should be arriving at my door on Tuesday or Wednesday next week and I'm excited to see how my babies take to it!!

They are strictly indoor only and have never been outside to feel the rain or nibble on grass or catch bugs. I wish they could. When we move house (whenever we find something suitable), we hope to rectify this situation.

Anyway, has anyone got any experiences with cat grass and has it helped with the general health and happiness of their cats, Diabetic or not?

I grow wheat for mine...some really like it, some eat too much and throw up if I let them, others ignore it. I get the seed from the feed store. I don't know if you have the same kind of 'feed store' there....they sell seed to farmers to plant.

Yes, we sort of do. But growing our own here would be awkward, as I think you need sun and we don't get much sun on our balconies. Also, we have difficulty even ACCESSING our balconies as the cats would want to come out with us, and they cannot. lol

Wheat? Isn't wheat carbs? I get confused by this stuff!!!

Both my cats love wheatgrass and I buy it regularly (already grown at a local farm) from a natural pet store. It does not affect Henry's blood sugar, but it does make my civie cat throw up sometimes (which would only be a concern if you've just given insulin and the whole meal comes up). And not to get too gross on you, but sometimes they don't chew it well enough and you'll see it at the other end which might require you to intervene...

HEHEHEH, oh dear. Well, in the past, sometimes Dweezil has chewed on this plastic Christmas tree we had (not anymore, lol) and he was just relentless with it, always attacking it! And one time we saw some little green plastic bits (SOFT plastic by the way. Very soft) in his litter box. Mmmm, delicious tree.

I bet he loves the cat grass. lol

My cats love it but my non-diabetic loves too much, he'll eat and eat and eat and then throw it up over and over and over so I have to keep it away from him or really monitor how much he eats. My diabetic (in remission) likes it too and seems to help keep them both regular and un-constipated. I grow my own, they sell the wheatgrass seeds at Wal-Mart, Target or any pet store.

It's the wheat seeds that are carby, not the growing grass. In the winter, I keep a little grow light running when there's no sun. I do keep the pots behind closed doors (my bathroom) so they don't have full time access to it or it would never get taller than an inch or so before someone came along a 'mowed' it.

If vomiting becomes a problem (a serious issue when insulin's in the mix) maybe you could try growing some catnip for them?

Both of my kitties love their grass, whether I bought it at a store or it sneaked through concrete cracks. Nibbling on it helps cats with digestion, even if they regurgitate it. In fact, I can usually tell when Mikey is working on a hairball because he'll start eating more grass.
