hi- my cat was recently diagnosed with diabates last week.
Its been a tough week, as I am a bit stressed about giving injections, and making sure to wait 12 hrs- etc etc- Hes on Hills W/D perscrip food per my vet, and he hates it- which is interfering with giving him his shot (must eat with shot) I learned ther Hills scrip food is VERY high in carbs, and grains (which is bad, I believe) but very high in fiber (which is good I think- but he hates it) Someone told me about "Evo" by Enova this is very LOW carb (16% vs 38% for Hills) - but its low fiber- hills is 9% fiber- Evo is only 1.39% fiber- A pet nutritionist said Hills is "crap" food for diabetic cats, and Evo is much better for this disease- I will check with my vet before giving my cat Evo, of course, but- HELP- Does anyone have any feedback on this? He's getting only 3 CC's of insulin, as its his first week of treatment, and he hasnt had his first "curve" done yet-

Hey there and welcome to the board!

What kind of insulin is he getting? Are you home testing?

It would be good for him to transition to a low carb canned wet food ( under10% carbs) since the Hills is very high carb. Many people here feed fancy feast classic pates, friskies pates or Wellness grain free. Here is a list of carbs in cat foods. http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf.

The low carb canned food would make it easier to regulate him and may help him into remission however it will cause his blood sugar levels to drop and will impact his insulin needs , so its critical you start to home test before you change his food.

Home testing also means you dont need to waste $ on expensive and less accurate vet curves... i strongly recommend it and cant give you info on it if you like?

Did the vet do a fructosamine test?

What was his glucose level at the vet?

Were there any ketones?
