I have posted before my cat had a urine blockage. He is three yrs old. He came home and didnt even pee outside of box like they said he may. I started royal canine food for the urine tract. But its very pricy. He has a brother and i have two other boy cats under. 9 months old. I really think i should have them on somethimg too as males are more prone to blockages. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also my male who did get the blockage will only eat the hard food for royal canine hates the moist. Worried hes not getting enough nutrition. Thanks

When I joined this forum my cat was eating the same prescription food and had been for about 13 years due to a blockage that he had, but it was terrible for his diabetes. With quite a lot of reluctance and fear, I stopped with that food and changed him to only low carb wet food (owing to the advice from this forum and the information at http://www.catinfo.org/). He's doing so much better right now, and I can say that I believe that the best things for cats urinary tracts is lots of water.

Good luck with your boys

I understand works for all. What is the name of the food you currently use? I am trying to figure out the best food. Appreciate all the feedback!

Personally, I feed Bozita and Catz Finefood (ordered online), but that's because I'm in the UK and we don't have many real options in the stores. Most of the US residents feed Fancy Feast or Friskies. If someone who knows off the top of their head doesn't respond with the varieties, I'll have a look for the list for you.

Hi,

So sorry to hear that your kitty has had a blockage. Poor little chap...
But the good news is that he has YOU looking after him, and you're here looking for info on what may be best to feed him! Excellent!

You've had some great advice already.
And I must echo what others have said about trying to transition your kitties to wet/canned food. Don't ever give up trying!
My lot were dry food addicts for years before one of them became diabetic at the age of 8. I found this forum and realised that I never should have been feeding them dry food at all...
I thought they'd never take to wet food but they did. It took time, and patience. But all of my five were successfully switched to a wet/canned diet. They've also now developed a taste for raw food too (something I never thought they'd ever do).

I've also now got a water fountain for them, and that encourages them to drink even more.

Do have a look at the following page on feline urinary tract health written by vet Dr Lisa Pierson:
http://www.catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth
This has a lot of hugely valuable information. (Although I should warn you that if you are of a particularly sensitive disposition you may find a couple of the photos a tad eye-watering.... :-| )

Edited to add: oops! I see that Kpassa has already given the link to the page above. Duh! (But I guess if it's worth saying then it's worth saying twice.... )

I use Friskies Special Diet because it's low enough in carbs for my diabetic, just fine for my non-diabetic to eat, and cheap enough for my wallet. Lots of people also use Fancy Feast Classics or Wellness Grain Free. You can check out the food chart at catinfo.org and look for anything under 12% carbs in the first Column C (since your cat is not diabetic, they can have a few more carbs than our diabetics are allotted ;-) ). What I did was print it off, highlight all the foods that were low enough carb and took it shopping with me.

Well, if you think about it, where are the vets getting their information? From the pet food companies sales reps of course.
