Last month's issue of Cat Fancy magazine had an article about feline diabetes: http://www.catchannel.com/vetlibrary/di ... e0001.aspx The article does say that low carb, high protein diets seem to be best for diabetics and that new genetically engineered insulins for Humans work well for cats. There's a brief section on hometesting but it doesn't really promote it, just "Humans with diabetes monitor their own blood sugar at home with portable blood glucose monitors. Cats, however, go to the veterinary hospital for blood-glucose monitoring.... home monitoring of blood-glucose concentrations may serve as a new tool in the management of diabetic cats.

I get cat fancy magazine and I did see the article. While it brought some awareness to Feline Diabetes, I wasn't overly impressed. This latest issue there was a letter to the editor about feline diabetes. This reader stated her vet told her 175 was normal BG for a cat. There were also some other things in her letter and in the article that were inaccurate. I had thought about writing my own letter; you may just have inspired me to do it!

"may"? Really "may"? Are they KIDDING??????? Who writes this stuff???? Sheesh. :-x :-x :-x :-x !

Some one (not me LOL) should write to them and give them so information. I find it amazing that regular people living this day to day always know more than the "experts".

A couple years ago, the editor of CF magazine had her cat go diabetic. She shot blind, and the cat went hypo and blind, and the editor soon had her PTS (or the cat died in another hypo episode, I don't really recall). I lost respect for CF then, because the editor's letter about the situation was so..."well, I did what I could." I probably still have the letter to the editor I wrote about that, but of course nothing was ever further published about that outrageous episode.

You are right this is OUTRAGEOUS! I'm glad you wrote to them. There's no excuse for someone in that position will tons of resources to not take proper care of her cat.

Very sad that someone who you would think would have access to endless resources could not do more for her cat.

I think someone should encourage Cat Fancy to do an article on FD.com and FDMB itself. I cannot think of people more dedicated to the care of cats than many right here, including Rebecca.
