cat enimas

I am bumping. Cedric has had 2, but both at the vet. Not sure I would try this myself, but I am a fraidy cat!

I did it years ago on my CRF cat Cleo(GA). That was before I knew about Miralax and she had frequent serious constipation problems.

I got the enema from my vet , but no real instruction. Really all you need is the syringe, probably a towel to "burrito" the cat for restraint and some paper towels for the inevitable mess. I'd also advise on help holding the cat still!

I'd keep him confined afterwards, until he goes too. Cleo didn't always make it to the box when things suddenly decided to come out.

I've been told that baby enemas can also be used, ones w/ no stimulants, just lubricants.

Thanks - I don't know if it's needed or not as someone(s) poo'd last night, but of course I was sleeping so no LB stalking to see who did it.

Something is off with my civvie and I'm just thinking of what possibly could be wrong. I am taking her to vet tomorrow to hopefully get answers, not just more questions or no resolution.

I would try giving Miralax in food for a while before an enema. If he isn't blocked that may do the trick. 1/8th to 1/4 tsp one or twice a day mixed in the food w/ extra water. Enemas aren't fun, on either side.

This might just be a 'tom' thing...but on the few occasions when i had to take his temp rectally...he pooped almost immediatly afterwards. So I think of this as an enima of sorts.
I also know for a fact tom will poop if i take him for a ride in the car....altho' this is a very mean way for me to get him to poop becuase it means i am scaring the crap out of him.....literally.

oh it's ok to LOL....most things that go on between me and Tom are really pretty comical.

There is a definite right way to do this, and once the vet explained
it to me, I decided it was not something I wanted to try on my own.

You need a PET enema. For cats.

One of the things I do remember is you insert it only about 1/2 to 1 inch, then
squirt a little bit of the stuff in, which acts as a lubricant.

Insert a bit more, SLOWLY. And this can be very difficult because
kitty is NOT GONNA LIKE THIS one bit. Best to have two people, one
to hold the cat and one to do the deed.

Probably need towels to wrap the cat in to restrain.

And I sure wouldn't rely on paper towels--they shred. Some clean rags would be better.

And if I had the way to do it, I'd confine cat to a shower stall, or other small
cleanable area with a litter box, until things happen. (Get everything set
up before hand).

And after the cat eliminates, there is still dribbling for up to a full day.
Watch out when you pick up cat. Have a towel handy.

And----don't expect normal bowel movements immediately the next day.
After you empty the bowel out, it takes some time for the pipe-line to
re-fill and things to move normally again.

You really need to get the enema solution from a vet. Phosphate enemas can kill cats. My friend's vet gave her cat the wrong enema and it died.
