Cat Blood Pressure - what is *normal*?

Just wondering if anyone knows what normal is for a cat's blood pressure? When Morris went in for his dental a few weeks back, my vet was concerned with his pre-op BP, but thought his BP during the surgery was just fine. When I took Morris in for his post-op check the other day, we checked his BP again - it was better than his pre-op BP, but still a little high.

My vet fully admits that they do not do BP on cats routinly on regular vet visits - they mostly just do it when the cat is having surgery, so she does not have much data on cats & BP. The 'rules' she was taught was that, generally speaking, a cat's BP should be less than 150.

As part of Morris' pre-op work up, he had an ECG done. It came back with a diagnosis of possible cardiomyopathy. My vet did a chest x-ray just before his dental, and it looked fine. Morris has had an abnormal heartbeat for at least the past 2 years - he drops a beat about once per minute.

Morris' pre-op BP was 190. During our post-op visit, they took 5 readings - 110, 140, 175, 175, 175

Morris has to go for another post-op check in a few weeks as his mouth hasn't finnished healing quite yet. We will check his BP again at that visit. My vet is also going to check around in her world to find suggestions. She is considering putting Morris on some type of medication because of his high BP & possible cardiomyopathy. She is concerned, however, about putting Morris on more medication considering he has diabetes & his pre-op labwork showed his first abnormal results for his kidney functions as well.

My vet wants me to do some research on this board (she is a wonderful vet who appreciates all I have learned from this website & shared with her) to see what information I could find out.

Generally when these type of cardiac issues arise on the board we recommend having the cat examined by a licensed cardiologist. One of our members, Jess & Earl is a cardiologist vet tech, so you may want to PM her and see what she thinks. There is a also an excellent Yahoo group for Feline Heart information at http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/feline-heart/

From notes I made when researching BP issues earlier this year when Gandalf started having seizures, a "very high" BP is 230/150. Not sure if that helps ease your mind or not. If there is an issue, your vet did a very good job monitoring and catching it.

Hello Gwen & Morris,
When Gumpy (GA) went to the er after her first seizure, her bp was over 190. At that time they told me they like bps to be 120. They took 4-5 test one after the other and did an average. We went for many visits after this and they actually came to my home to see if the test would be better due to stress. After we did an ultra sound, we found that she probably had hypertension all her life. Her little heart muscles were very thick. She was on several meds to help. I think the highest she got was 290 after having a seizure at home and another one in their office, due to subqu fluids. I know of 2 different kinds of machines as the vet used a different kind that the er did??? I think I read that the er's machine was actually better for a more acurate reading. I did not know of that many times that they did a heart rate but once the reading was 190bp and 240 heart rate.
Gumpy's kidneys were not in the best shape either, but she had to have bp meds. We just kept an eye on the kidney readings for elevation while she was taking the bp med.
Keep us posted on Morris!
