Help!! my cat is newly diagnosed as diabetic, we had a good schedule going with giving him insulin. Monday he went for a glucose curve and the vet upped his dose to 2 units and he seemed to be doing fine. Wed we came home from work to find that he had eaten two seedlings I was growing on my window sill. One was corn, and one was Romaine lettuce. Ever since he has not been eating or drinking much at all. Wed night he threw up a couple of times, and had some diarrhea and he threw up again last night. The vet said she wasn't aware of anything poisonous in them, but he is not eating and if he is not eating I can't give him his insulin. Tonight we took him back to the vet and they gave us a pill to increase his appetite. If that doesn't work he needs to go back for more bloodwork and possibly a hospital stay. This all happened out of nowhere, could the seedlings have made him sick?!!

My cats will often go for the plants when they have hairballs or are constipated. I usually get them some catgrass if it becomes an issue with them and the plants. You might want to make sure he's using the litterbox.

so does anyone have any idea why he would suddenly stop eating then? He is acting pretty normal otherwise, and used to go nuts when he got fed.

I'd go back to the vet and ask to check for ketones, for potassium level, and if he might be constipated. If none of those are issues, then it might be nausea, and there are medications they can give you in addition to the appetite stimulant. A cat can't go too long without eating so try to offer a variety of foods that he might like. If he doesn't eat for a couple days, you need to see the vet.

ya, I think he is probably going to have to go back tomorrow if he doesn't eat a proper meal in the morning. He has been picking at food here and there, but not wolfing it down like he was. We have tried a couple different foods in the last couple of days and it doesn't seem to matter much.

If you are willing, and they are willing, also ask them to show you how to test blood sugar at home. It's not too hard once you get a little practice, and it help immensely when trying to treat or know what is going on. Don't buy the expensive glucometer from the vet though, most people here use cheaper human glucometers. Post back here to let us know what the vet says or what the lab results show. There are a variety of reasons why diabetic cats lose their appetite, especially when newly diagnosed. Common ones are the ones I mentioned above, but there could be other things. Labs will really give a better idea.

she showed me how to check it on Monday :) I just need to go get the strips and glucometer now so I can do it at home! thank you!!

A lot of people use the relion from walmart, I use up&up from target. Both are cheap with cheap strips.

The vet said she wasn't aware of anything poisonous in them,
Seconding what Meya suggested about possible constipation or nausea.

And also... Although the seedlings themselves may be harmless, the seeds may have had chemical treatments/coatings applied to them (to inhibit mould and/or promote growth). Had he pulled out the entire seedlings and eaten them? If that's so then I'm wondering if he ingested the remnants of the seed also.
Did you sow the seeds yourself? And if so are you able to check the packets to see if the seeds have been treated?

Sending well wishes to your boy :bighug:

Specifically the Relion Confirm or Confirm Micro. Relion is the WalMart grouping; Confirm is the specific meter.

Here's a very useful nausea symptom checker from Tanya's Site. If you read it and then watch your kitty's behaviour when offered food it could give you some useful clinical observations to share with your vet. There is also information about nausea treatments on the same page at Tanya's Site.

If you can learn to test your kitty's BG at home it will give you a much better guide to what's happening. What insulin is your kitty receiving?
